Well, tickle my perch, it seems Fish Skin for clarinet pads does exist and would probably have been more likely to have been used back in the 1800s.
Maybe I will be lucky after all, in my quest for an authentic renovation of an 1830s French 13 salt-spoon key clarinet.
The remains of the original pads certainly appear much more translucent and thin-skinned than Kid Leather, just like Fish Leather would be.
So no goldbeater's trade secrets or intestines thanks
