 Know anything about this old clarinet?
Author: Ken

I purchased an old wooden clarinet--stemped "Ledoux" and "National" on the bell.
It has original post locks on the lower section and seems to be well made. Only one problem: E (lower line of staff) sounds "Whimpy" without the rich tone quality that the rest of the horn has. It has just recently been repadded. I cannot find anything about the origin of hte company or who made the instrument. Any ideas?

Thanks. Ken

I believe that Mark C has put the Langwill info on Ledoux on the BB previously, so it may be available from an archives "Search the Phorum". Re: a "stuffy" E [bottom of staff], it might be insufficient rise of the D pad, deposits in tone holes, or be in need of a pro "tuning" job, possibly undercutting? Prob. , dont spend a lot on it without opinions of quality and/or value. Others please help. Don

Stuffiness can also result from minute leaks. Even though it has been repadded the large ones at the bottom of the horn are difficult to seat and may leak even when just replaced.

I'm 1344 miles (according to my trip odometer in my car) from my book. I'll try & remember to look it up when I get back to Texas next week.

Mark C. (about 30 feet instead of 1344 miles from the Sneezy computer for a change ...)

Many thanks to those of you who offered help with my poor quality E. In lookin for pads that might be leaking, I noticed one that should have been fully open and was partially closed----a little bending job was all that it needed and now things are A-OK with as good a sound as I am able to produce. I think that it will be fun playing that old thing, now. My old clarinet that I was beginning to feel was useless is now functional again. Thanks. :>}
