Removing smell from hard rubber barrel
Author: tyleman

For several months I've been playing a wonderful Emil Jardin Paris hard rubber clarinet. Just within the past few days the barrel has taken on an unpleasant odor. I do have other barrels to use on the instrument but this one seems to work the best with it. Does anyone have any suggestions for removing the smell?

thanks in advance.

What kind of smell is it? Something organic, like mold/mildew or bacteria? or something sulphurous from the rubber itself?

It's a sulphurous smell. I've heard hard rubber that is old and exposed to heat (and if it turns green) can have this, but this clarinet hasn't turned green. I tried applying some lemon oil to it but this hasn't made any difference.

Try ammonia, followed by a good rinse with dish detergent and lukewarm water.

Did that work ? I have a Charles Bay mp that is very nice but stinks like a skunk the minute it gets warm. Washing, oiling, greasing have not helped.

I haven't tried it yet. What I thought I'd try is putting it in a jar with ground coffee. I'll see (or smell) what happens. I've had good luck in the past with this approach with smells. Although it doesn't work with stinky old instrument cases!
