 Buffet Alto Clar, 1980's
Author: Will Thompson

I recently acquired a Buffet Alto, serial number dates it to 1982. Came with a stock Buffet MP. I'm interested in upgrading the mp. Does anyone know what bore the horn has from that generation and can you recommend a mouthpiece. Any other tidbits on this horn would be appreciated too!

Thanks!

I know someone who love the Vandoren BD5 on Alto, very good round sound.

Another one tested the Grabner, says it has deep low end frequencies.

A clarinetist I know let me play with his Pomarico once, (and with his Leblanc Alto) : very rich sound, impressive.

I tested the Vandoren B44 : very easy and comfortable but too much on the bright side for me.

And the Vandoren B40 did'nt impressed me, it's OK but that's all.

I finaly play a C* by Selmer and love it : even and punchy (but I have a Selmer Alto clarinet, not the same conception than the Buffet...).

About bore size : for the actual Prestige Alto clarinet it's a 689″ bore. Don't know about the previous model if to was the same.

0.689" is around 17.5mm.

I've tried several mps for alto on my Selmer and the BD5 is the most agreeable to play all round; I got mine "new used" so it was also a bargin.

I have a Buffet Prestige and like the Grabner for all around sound and intonation.

I bought the updated neck joint for my Prestige that allows pitch adjustments and found it made the overall sound of the horn much improved too. It was ~$400 but IMHO a big step up.

I have a 1972 Buffet alto and the best stock mouthpiece I could find was the Hite with a Vandoren 3 reed. I did not like any of the Vandoren or Fobes pieces I tried unfortunately.

If u're trying 2 develop excellent tone quality, I'd recommend a Selmer or Pyne.

1982... Does it say "Radio" or "Professional" or nothing under the logo? I believe the "Prestige" alto came later.

Does your instrument have a double register venting mechanism?

Hi. No "Radio" or "Professional" or Prestige. Nothing under the Buffet logo; has double register -- looks like it activates at clarion G.

Supposedly also all index, long and ring finger keys in a straight line and concave. I think your instrument is the edition that was after the Radio/Professional and before the Prestige.
