I have a 1960's series 9* clarinet. I would like to get a shorter tuning barrel as since I don't play much now I am having trouble playing in tune. I can't find any shorter barrels for the 9* but I can find them for other Selmer Paris instruments. Would a Selmer Recital barrel for instance fit my series 9*?

I think that your best option would be to either find a used Selmer 9* barrel and have it cut, or get an aftermarket barrel from one of the barrel makers.
For example: https://reedworthy.com/store
He is a Selmer artist and knows everything clarinet/barrel related (IF possible to know "everything"), so I'd think he can make a barrel to fit your Selmer 9*.

Selmer Recital barrels are much wider in their outer diameter compared to regular barrels, but also have a very narrow bore compared to a Series 9* and most other Selmers, so they're not an ideal replacement.
How short do you need it to be? I think my Series 9* Bb has a 65mm barrel and the A has a 64mm one - they are the original barrels as they're stamped with serial numbers matching the clarinets which also happen to be consecutively numbered which is very rare.

Thanks for that.
My series 9* has a 66.5 mm barrel. I have played it in tune for the last 50 years but since I mainly play bass clarinet now I am having difficulty getting the clarinet in tune.
I will take note of your comments and see what I can find.

Thanks for the suggestion, had a quick look at their website but they will be outside of my price range. I only ever play if the band are short of clarinets

You could try https://www.pereira3d.com/
The manufacturer has Selmer barrels in several sizes and a synthetic barrel costs $50. They are quite good.

If you cut yours by 1.5mm it should bring tuning up by about 10-15C.

Thanks for that but cutting the tenon would not reduce the inside length and I don't have tools to change the length of the tenon. Your comment regarding how much 1.5 mm will effect the tuning could be useful though

DO NOT CUT THE TENON!
I suggested to cut the original barrel.

DO NOT CUT THE ORIGINAL BARREL!
I suggest to cut the mouthpiece tenon (and shoulder).
There's no harm in shortening the mouthpiece if it's a model that's readily available whereas finding another Series 9* barrel of that length is a tall order.
I've shortened the tenon and shoulder on my Vandoren "13" series M15 mouthpiece with no problem by 2mm which did the trick (as it was hard to play up to pitch on it using 66.5mm and 67mm Selmer BT/CT/Series 9 barrels) rather than shortening a barrel that's becoming increasingly rare.

Chris
Thanks for your comment. as you correctly say taking a couple of mm off the tenon of the mouthpiece will have the effect of shortening the internal length of the instrument by that amount. Since the internal length is the tuning length I will have a look to see if I have got suitable tools to do that. I have a spare mouthpiece so it won't be a disaster if it fails

Make a wooden mandrel that will fit in the mouthpiece bore (you can always cover it with masking tape if it's too loose) and mount it in a lathe, then machine down the end of the tenon and also the shoulder by the same or a similar amount.
The best thing is to measure the depth of the upper socket on the barrel and make the mouthpiece tenon that same length, or maybe a tiny bit longer so there's no gap between the end of the tenon and the base of the socket. You can skim down the mouthpiece tenon shoulder to achieve that if the tenon is too short.

Are you aware of the RSBerkeley adjustable barrel? Reasonably priced. Works quite well.
Before cutting into your current gear, it's worth a look.

You may be able to get a Berkeley barrel from The Auction Site That Must Not Be Named. I'm in Canada, and have considered it, though I'm holding off for now.*
*I'm leaning toward the Polaris now, if I find I need a tuning solution once band rehearsals resume.

I know many of us are just having fun with this (and the implied parallel to Voldemort in Harry Potter) but, just for clarity's sake, and speaking for myself and not necessarily for Mark, the rule is "No auction (eBay or otherwise) links, references, comments, or questions about currently selling items." It's the links or comments about merchandise selling on Ebay that are not allowed, not the name itself.
Not an issue for me at all, nor a criticism of Beth, but I wanted to take advantage of her comment as a pretext to get this in.
