Hey Everyone!
I was thinking about buying a new pair of marching shoes, which ones are best? We have a pair of drillmasters, but for some reason, they aren't very comfy... thanks

I just use a pair of black navy oxfords from my military band. Not the shiny kind, but regular leather. When iI was in the guard I just used a little pair of $6.99 canvas sneakers from kmart. I know people that order shoes from a company called Dinkles, too. I guess it depends on how strict with shoes your band is. If you can go to Payless and pick up a pair of oxfords for $20, do it. They last a while, too.

We currently do have black drillmasters marching shoes. They don't care what kind of shoes you have, just so they are black

When I had to march in high school I just took an old comfy pair of sneakers I had and spray painted them black. It worked great.

Big black Doc Martin boots might work well also, as long as they don't have the yellow stiching around the bottom (and if they do, a little bit of black electrical tape will fix that!)

In my high school marching band the band director ordered the shoes for everyone, you let him or the uniform mom know that you needed new marching shoes and told them what size then they ordered the shoes all together. Everyone was required to wear the same shoes.

Our band's the same way, its all about uniformity, they don't like individuality for some reason. But thats ok I guess, it wins competitions.

I would prefer patent leather shoes. I just like the way they look in the stadium lights. I like "marching" shoes that have a slanted heel that make it easier for correct marching form. I had a few pairs of dinkles and they lasted pretty good.

Just a tip: To polish patent leather, my band "mom" recommended vasoline. (If you don't like that idea, I'd just use mink oil.)

I didn't prefer patent leathers for one reaosn and one reason only: The only patent leather shoes I can ever find are military "Class A" Uniform wear shoes. Their leather tends to scuffe easily and has troulbe bending properly for the "rolling toes" marching method I was forced to adopt. ;) I found that if you go to your local Wal-Mart's shoe section you can find a buffing pad for a few bucks that will wipe off the layers of dust and grime and leave marching shoes looking like new again. Well, not new...

Doc Martens do work well. I have friends who swear by them. They just color the yellow thread in with black permanent marker.

I wanna know what part of the back woods you guys are from that you're not required to wear uniform shoes.......isn't that part of being in uniform? Everyone looking the same.....I thought that was the idea; not "let's look the same except for our shoes" That just seems odd to me...

Like Salt's school, ours took shoe sizes and everyone had to buy a pair. I did notice some of the schools down here use those funky looking shoes with the turned up toes. They remind me of Persian slippers. I was told by one band director it was because of the holes and grass clumps on the field. They are supposed to reduce tripping.

We DO have to wear uniform shoes. But it helps to have a spare set.

Our uniforms aren't standard, really. Musicians wear tuxedos with red jackets and black pants with black sequined top hats. Guard wears black catsuits with a sequined vest type thing over top with red sequined hats. The black shoes aren't the eye catchers for us really. At least, we've never had complaints. Basically, a black shoe is a black shoe. Unless it's drastically different, it's accepted. How many different kinds of black shoes can you get? Unless it's really sneaker-like, has huge soles or heels, it's fine, really. The band is generally in more of an oxford, hard top shoe, while the guard generally opts for a canvas sneaker. If anyone has questions, they're given options - including drillmasters and dinkles.
