Well, you could get one of those that stacks inside a sax case. Why don't you surf over to woodwind and brasswind and see what's available? Or, the French pouchette case for Buffets is available (also at wwandbw).

The woodwind and brasswind sell those Bam clarinet cases, their pretty small, you can hold the case in one hand easily.

You could wrap it in a handtowel, secure that with a couple of rubber bands :]

if i was going backpacking i wouldn't take either. the idea is to do something with mother nature.
I tried to play my horn while riding my horse and she went crazy. everyone a critic.

I thought I had a small case, until I saw two clarinet cases that are almost half the size of mine, I know one of them is playing on a Yamaha clarinet. They are supposed to hold little more than your clarinet and your reeds.

Then try the pro-tec. small but no room for anything except the horn. good protection.

Yamaha's student cases, at least are quite small. Little storage, but a very efficient case layout. Case won't even hold an extra mouthpiece.
The really amazing one is their bass clarinet case. Their extended (low C) bass fits in a case that is about the size of a trumpet case, just 1.5 times as long.

I recently bought a small pochette style clarinet case from www.flutesonline.com. It measures 14" X 8". It is 3 3/4 " thick at the bell end and 2 3/4" thick at the other end. It is the same basic case the Selmer Paris uses for their non-Signature clarinets, although Selmer adds a permanently attached zippered, padded case cover when you get it from them. This is the same basic case though, and as I recall it was less than $50.00 including shipping. I haven't seen one smaller that is sold new today, at least not at that kind of price.

The small Pro-tec is on eBay for $37.95. I thought of the student Yamaha and the Buffet, but IMO they are poor quality. Bob, the small Pro-tec has noom room, But its the cheapie model. The CA (for carryall) Model has lots of room!

he asked small. When ever you increase storage space you increase size.

The small Pro-tec case is very good for traveling- well padded. I carry my laptop and a Bb with me all over the place. It has a pocket on the front that will hold plenty. I take 10 or 15 reeds with me a metronome, swab, cork grease, vitamin bottle with water a penzulaoblongata etc. etc. I even put a K&M folding stand in there on lesson day no problem. The only draw back to it is there is no room for music in the case. I put it in my suit case to bring it along. It's great after they x-ray the case when they say "What's that a flute you got in there?" ;~)
Best,

and I meant to add, Joe - great to hear from somebody who carries the same stuff. I need to put both in a comfortable backpack when I travel. I need to get the Clarinet case first, then size it all up into a backpack... Have not seen the smallest
ProTec, my current old case is about 4 inches thick, Im hoping to at least improve on that... thanks again...

Wayne,
The pro-tect is not very thin. I usually carry two bags with me. A thin computer case and the clarinet case. If you are going to use a day pack it might start getting a little tight in there. If you are using a full sized pack it will go no problem. Brenda's idea about the sax case insert and the pouchette sounds great for a small set up. The pro-tec is a good insulating bag for going in and out of air conditioning and helps when someone chucks their briefcase in the overhead compartment at your instrument! Check it out before you buy one.
Good luck,

I remember a Leblanc "backpack" case for the Espirit. Now, I've always thought they were stupid looking, but maybe there's an idea there?

Like the story of the high-school girl who played soprano, alto, and bass clairnet. How did she carry all of them along with her school things? Simple: Strap her clarinet to her backpack and carry the other two with her. (I knew a girl that was in this exact situation and that was how she solved it.)
The backpack idea seems to be for the multi-clarinet players, but who says that your hands have to be full with other clarinets? Why not a laptop?

SKB makes a really small clarinet case.

Personally, I did find with my Pro-Pac on internationsl flights, even with a second instrument in tow. The protection is great, and the storage is pretty good. You could probably put your laptop's accessories in there and carry the laptop itself in one of those really thin cases.
Good luck!

I don't think I've ever seen a failed Yamaha clarinet case here. Perhaps ours are different.
