AYO audition excerpt - Nielsen Flute Concerto
Author: Robin

Hello everyone.
I have a fairly specific question regarding the tempo of the flute concerto by Nielsen. Australians doing the AYO audition will know where I mean - it's a brief passage just before figure C. On the excerpt that has been given to me, someone has handwritten a tempo marking of a crotchet (quarter note) = 110. I have checked two recordings of the passage and neither has clocked more than a crotchet = 90 - a significantly more managable task.

Has anyone actually heard this excerpt performed anywhere closer to the crotchet = 110 marked on our parts?

I have heard it at about 100; as with all pieces the tempo will vary between recordings. However, as the excerpt SAYS to play it at 110, that is what I'm aiming for. Where do you come from, have you been in it before?

At the risk of sounding very stupid, I'm going to update on my last post. I have since been to my lesson, and my clarinet teacher and i agreed that in fact it probably was better to play it a little slower and cleaner. To have to technique absolutely down sounds more imprssive anyway. On the other hand, I would make sure it doesn't go too much slower or the auditioners will notice it.

Yeah -that is good advice I think. Anyway - we ought to remember that part of our mark is for interpretation - so I wouldn't have thought you'd want to aim for something faster (or slower) that what you'd heard in recordings and performances.

In reference to your first post - I'm from Melbourne and no, I've never got into anything before. I've tried for four years! So I'm starting to feel a bit like Goran Ivanisevich and Wimbledon - maybe this will be my year ;-)

Good luck.
