 Inexpensive PA System
Author: Hank Lehrer

Hi all,

I may be doing some clarinet quartet gigs in the coming days. Indoors, no problem but if we move to outdoor venues, we will likely need some sort of small sound system for announcements as well as a little assist on the ensemble sound.

It would seem that two mics, an amp with mixer, and some small speaker systems along with the appropriate stands would be a bare-bones system. Does any one have experience with assembling and using such a set up?

I'm assuming that there will be a power source and I may be able to use two of the bookshelf speakers I have already to get started (no need for subwoofers and huge speaker arrays). Maybe even an older amp coupled with a new mixer.

Any ideas on specific equipment and/or set up steps would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hank

For your needs, perhaps one of the all-in-one systems might be the best fit. Here are 2 that I've used:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/L1Pro8--bose-l1-pro8-portable-line-array-system

Don't let the looks of these fool you - they can get LOUD.

If you go the traditional route, I'm thrilled with my "small" PA setup, which is JBL Eon series:

and a behringer mixer. Speakers are powered, so no need for a separate amp. They are also LOUD - 1000 watts per speaker.Hank Lehrer wrote:

I second the motion on an all in one system. I am familiar with the Bose which is very good. The JBL should be fine as well.

Here is the problem with home speakers. They are designed for close listening. Their dispersion (effective range) is wide for small spaces (rooms). Home speakers also are designed to function WITH room interactions (bouncing off of walls and stuff). PA speakers have a long "throw." They beam their sound out much more linearly to achieve larger distances and are meant to contain ALL frequencies without the aid of room interactions. You would NOT be happy with a home speaker serving that role.

Hi All,

This an old thread from 2021 but I would like to see if there is any updated information on the topic.

My quartet's immediate need now is for just a small, portable PA system with mic for announcements during a performance. We have found over the past three years that we are performing in larger indoor settings and the announcements are sometimes not heard very well by the audience.

A one-piece unit would easily fill the bill. Are there any suggestions?

Hank

I use one (or two) of the Everse 8's - had great luck with them, and they can run for hours off the built-in battery.

For the price, they're great little devices. It seems like every time I need a system, there's no power available, so these guys have been a life saver.

Last used them up at a remote mountain location for a wedding. They worked all day on one charge. Got lots of compliments about the audio quality.

Not perfect, but work well depending on your application/need.

I've used this, both indoors & out. It's gotten the job done.
