Aaah, i just got back from registering for my first semester classes for college..and being a music major, it was pretty good. I have such a set order of courses that i have to follow that I pretty much have my whole schedule put together. Ashley doesnt have to worry about it. I only have 2 classes not in the music building - Chemistry & Physics for the Environment, and Elementary French I. I'm now majoring in music education and minoring in French. I've never taken a french class in my life, now i'm minoring in it. should be interesting. But the wonderful school of music laid out all my credits for me, and i stay in that building almost the whole day. Now if only i could get out of marching band my life would be great...... :o)

Ashley, I complained about marching band in college, too, but it provided some of the most vivid memories of college. Just enjoy everything while you are there because it is a "wonderfulness" being a music major.

I look "way" back on my experiancies in high school and college marching bands, seasons of marching with an award winning mid-western drum and bugle corps, and many more seasons judging drum and bugle corps competitions--countless hours of agonizing rehearsals in hot sun, rain, sleet and snow on asphale, concrete and muddy surfaces, marching BEHIND the horses, circus parades, long bus rides, festival parades, VFW and American Legion events, college band shows during November snow storms, two Rose Bowl parade and bowl appearances in sunny Pasadena--and guess what?????!!!!!! .........I wouldn't want to go through it again, EVER, But those experiancies are some of my fondest memories and I am now thankful for every march step that I took. The only marching that I still do is with my old college alumni marching band--we do a pre-game show (with run-on) and part of the half-time show with one rehearsal (7:30 AM) and--why we still all put up with this torture??--we get into the game for free. Marching band (while it is a mindless waste of your musical talent and will get you knowwhere in real life) will be remembered as some of the best times of your life--I speak from experiance. Enjoy, and while do, Good Clarineting!!!!!!!

I hate the concept of marching band, but it has provided some of the best moments of my life. Playing in front of 110,000 or so people is kind of neat! Plus, where I go to school, people actually support the marching band. As much as the practices and such did suck, all the traveling was awesome. Our band will travel to Florida and Chicago this upcoming year among other places, so you get to party as well. Plus, there is one experience I will never forget...my freshman year my school won the national championship in football! Go Vols!

Its not that I hate marching band (I only borderline hate it :o) Just the idea of Hell Week and 7 hours a day practices, and a neckstrap tan, and playing sax all the time messing up my clarinet embouchure. And because of the time commitment for marching band, I couldnt get into Accellerated Rhetoric, so i have to take that second semester. I couldnt get into Elementary Psych either..or spanish, but i'm taking french now so thats ok.
ooh, cant wait for theory IV...I'm in serious trouble if people that are good at theory have trouble with it..theory isnt exactly my strong point.
I absolutely cannot WAIT for class strings though..group piano should be fun too. Instrumental Techniques should be fun too.. I just have to get the un-fun classes out of the way first :o)

French is fun, and if you're adept at English (lit and grammar) it shouldn't be too hard to pick up. That's what I've observed, at least. If you need any help, drop me an email - I've spent 5 years (soon to be 6) in French.. I think I'm actually almost fluent. Scary thought, eh?
Good luck with the music, too, btw. =) I'm undecided about marching band next year. Rutgers has a great program, but do I want to put myself through it again? Time will tell.

I guess I am an odd child, I love marching band in high school. The college I am going to now (I am at a Community College) does not have a marching program and I am looking for one with one to transfer to.
Willie, you were in theory IV before doing German augmented 7ths cords, you are lucky...in my first year, second semester theory class (it equals Theory 2 at any University) we did German augmented 7ths and more. I love the class, but I have been told that our theory teacher pushes us harder then most.
Ashley, best of luck in College, it is SO much FUN!
If you do not mind me asking what College are you going to?

I dont mind, I'm going to the U of Iowa..only 3 1/2 hours away from my hometown, but they have a good music program and i'm really looking forward to it. The only thing i'm still wondering about is how i'm going to get halfway across campus in 10 minutes on mondays between French and Clarienet Seminar. that should be intersting. Time to get a bike.

I'm really bad at theory too-and German augmented 7th sound not fun-I've never had theory before, except for this past year-from anyone's experience, does it take some time to sink in? Does it just suddenly make sense one day? I really want to do well at it and from what I understand it's really important-but sometimes it's just like a foreign language to me! Same with ear training class :-( Any advice or encouragement? I love being a music major though-as difficult as it is at times :-)

You know, 7 hour a day band practices really aren't that bad.... for high school we had 10 am to 9 pm practices in August at band camp. They may have been hot and hard but looking back they were all very fun and a great bonding experience. I'm just glad that we didn't have band camp where you had to stay overnight....I got to go home after practice and soak my feet then flop into my own bed.....I miss it already and this will be my first year without it!

Have you met Dr. Mead? I know she was on sabbatical the Spring semester working on her second CD of Brazilian music. I think she'll be teaching again in the Fall. Not sure. Dr. Maxey, who was subbing for her, is also a fine teacher as well. He was on sabbatical a couple of years ago and did a recital and masterclass at Rice University (here in Houston).
My partner studied with her for his undergraduate, and we spent a day with her while we were in Iowa City for Spring Break back in March. She's a wonderful person. And, from the people i know who have studied with her, a great teacher as well. I'm looking forward to seeing her again at ClarFest in Aug.
Hope you enjoy the school. It's a lovely campus and i love visiting Iowa (a great break from the heat here in Houston). Loved seeing snow for the first time in March while in Houston it was in the upper 80's :-).
