 It's "ornamentation"
But what this book (the 21st century version) needs are better photographs. The old one is great.

I'm still working on embellishments for the 'Breeze-Easy' series.

I recall learning from A Tune A Day sometime back in the '60s. Might be a silly question, but what do you mean by ornamenting for that book? Learning grace notes, etc.?

I loved Tune A Day, my first ever tutor book. And in those days I could have resembled the boy on the modern cover.
A great book, but I cannot fathom why they would include in a beginners book, an exercise Slurring Same Fingering from Upper to Lower Register.
OK to do this into left hand notes, but all the slurs are there, including : Clarion D to low G; E to A; C down to F; B to low E. They have the grace to note that the first 2 of these are "difficult". That , for a beginner is surely an understatement and I wasted loads on trying to persuade my clarinet to notice I had dropped the register key.
