One of my favorite swing-bebop clarinetists is Chuck Hedges from Milwaulke. I just bought his Swingtet CD: Live at Andy's in Chicago. What a great player and is this guy underestimated and undervalued or what ?..Anyway.... The cover on the CD has a picture of Chuck playing and it shows that his instrument has one of those weird barrels........what is it ? It's corrugated the way plastic sewer pipes are.....Is this that Eddie Daniels..Deg...Accubore Tuning barrel ? Any comments or recommendations from folks who know ?

Sounds like a traditional Accubore (finned). The ED Accubore isn't finned (at least an older model wasn't).

Chuck is a truely great world-class jazz clarinetist, AND, (FYI)an excellant repair technician. He has been doing work on my professional instruments for over twenty-five years. Anyway, the last time I saw Chuck at Andy's, he was playing a LeBlanc Concerto with the standard barrel. He was going to try out the new Selmer clarinet, but I havn't heard if he has switched to that as of yet. In any case, Chuck plays on whatever comes his way and always seems to sound great no matter what his set-up happens to be. He is just one of those "natural" talents that we all admire and aspire to be and sound like. So, as the saying goes, if you want to know how to get to Carnegie Hall or you want to sound like Chuck, "Practice Man, Practice." Don't rely on a new fad barrel or whatever.

Hey there Mr Fuller:
I was just curious....eh....I have never seen a clarinet barell that looked like a miniature sewer pipe......exscuse me for asking....geez..!!.....and ! I don't give a S*** about Carnegie Hall and any other form of condescending stale jokes that are irrelevant to the purpose of my post !!
Now.....having said that.
Thank you for your indeed great post on Chuck Hedges.....he is a rare treasure.......he is everything you have said and more.......He can do everything Buddy De F can do and ( I almost said but however ;-) I wont go there) he does it with warmth and musicality he is a virtuoso but his technique never gets in the way of his musical thinking. What a delightful musician.......I never heard of him until two weeks ago.....now he is my number one man on clarinet on a long list of great players....and he repairs clarinets too......you're kidding.....an artist-craftsman....I'm gonna spread the word on CH....he is such a breath of fresh and welcome air.....Jazz Clarinet Lives !......Thank you chuck Hedges !......and William...thank you for that great info !

I wish that some of the new barrels would look more like
a traditional barrel. Most of them look just plain cheesy!

Just wondering, are those Acubore barrels very high quality? And is the a better option available? I haven't found much in the way of barrels.
