 R.I.P. Gordon Palmer

It seems to be quite a while since he posted here, but long time Clarinet BBoard folks will remember Gordon (NZ). A fine gentleman and woodwind doubler, always helpful with his knowledge of instrument repair and, for me at least, flute technique.

Gordon passed away September 15th. Rest in peace, Gordon.

Wow. So sad to hear that. Thanks for the notice.

I don't know if it has been shared here, but I also recently learned that our board's Lelia Loban passed away a while back. I was sorry to hear that too.

I was not aware of Lelia’s passing. Thank you for sharing that information, Fuzzy. Did not know her, but always enjoyed her presence on the board. Rest in peace, Lelia.

John, thanks for letting us know about Gordon. I had many interesting discussions with him here and via email, never met him but considered him a friend. He will be missed!

Thanks for letting us know this sad news. Gordon was also a very active and knowledgeable member of SOTW, where I learned of his passing. He will surely be missed.

From what I heard Gordon learned late last year he had pancreatic cancer. Seems it kept it quiet only informing family and a few others. He was a gentleman who was not hesitant to share his knowledge.

I was shocked to hear this over on Facebook. I realised he'd gone off the radar, but I wasn't expecting this.

He was one of the longest standing contributors of this and the oboe and sax boards and was here when I first found this board back in the early 2000s.

As well as carrying out experiments to dispel the usual myths - he even carried out an experiment with an HW Pad Saver to see if they shed fibres by putting one in and out an alto sax 3000 times (while watching telly) and that proved less than a handful of fibres were shed, contrary to popular belief they're bad for saxes from people who haven't even used them (and I've been using them since the '80s with no problem).

Former oboe finisher
Howarth of London
1998 - 2010

The opinions I express are my own.

So now she and Shadow Cat are together again. [wink]

When I learned of the passing of Gordon (NZ), I think I kinda went into a state of shock coupled with a severe sense of loss and that prevented me from responding sooner.

It's just that I've read so many of his postings over many, many years that I clearly sensed his desire to truly help people with whatever problems they had. I sensed that he really cared and that's what made his postings so impressionable to me.

I sincerely miss him. R.I.P., Gordon. I believe you've helped many on this forum.
