 Clarinet Case for a Backun FatBoy Barrel
Author: Quinn

What kind of case can fit a full Bb Clarinet and a Backun Barrel? Hi, my name is Quinn and I am a student with not a ton of money and I can't for the life of me find a that will fit my Backun fatboy barrel. No other place on the internet has seemed to give me the answer, so I was wondering if someone here could recommend one that is cheaper and can still protect my clarinet.

Isn't there an accessory area in your case where you can store it at least long enough to know you want to keep it for the foreseeable future? It seems to me I had a couple of them once a long time ago and they fit into my regular case, maybe a little snugly. I think all you'll be able to do is buy another case and force the the fatboy into the barrel holder, which you could do with your current case. I think most cases are foam of some kind under the velveteen or whatever it's covered with.

I doubt if you'll find anything explicitly made to accommodate the fatboy at anything like a bargain price. You could find someone to alter the barrel area of your case or another one - but in the end forcing the barrel in will probably do the same thing and cost less. Unless you decide later to go back to a normal barrel and it swims around too freely.

Maybe someone else has had a different experience.

This is a great case:

https://www.amazon.com/Protec-Clarinet-Detachable-Pocket-BLT307BX/dp/B07FB8MYFJ/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=protec+clarinet+case&qid=1599601331&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE5RUo4UkwzWkpKSzImZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAwMzMyMzQxWE1UQUQxMVM2Uk42JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxODg1OTcxRFZCRFdaQU1IWDRTJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

I have it and love it and barrel "depression" seems to fit anything. Also plenty of accessory room too. I have removed the pouch and the backpack straps. It's just a great small case that stays open on your lap as you assemble. Available in blue, black and silver.

I put a Fatboy into the Alpha student case and broke the cheap snap on one side. I stopped said case because the other snap lock was loosening. I finally tried a micro Protec which turned out great. However a full sized swab does not fit well nor will the case take more than 2 reeds. Before the Protec, I was using a clarinet mouthpiece pouch for the barrel and swab. Both fit a backpack that fit in an airplane rack.

You need to see the above case in person.....NOT like previous Protec cases!!!!

I've tried in many cases, but none of them seem to fit it right I currently have it in a buffet academy model (1964) case in the barrel slot, and it fits, but it requires a little pressure and doesn't really hold it all to well.

A Reed & Squeak case would solve the problem: they have padded channels for the instruments and accessories. They come with zipped pouches for mouthpieces etc and can supply padded dividers to put where you want them to separate barrels or other items. They are also not expensive. See < http://reedandsqueakcases.com/shop/single-clarinet-case-suitable-for-bb-a-c-eb-expnt>

I’ve been using their compact double as a Bb/Eb case for a few years now, and am very happy with it.
