Vandoren cane quality
Author: Suzanne
Date: 2001-07-07 00:05

I opened a box of Vandorens the other day (traditional blue box) and 9 out of the 10 reeds were literally brown as dirt. They looked like they were burnt or something. I thought that Vandoren had people who quality-controlled the cane that gets made into reeds, so that the over-sun-baked cane (like the box I had) and the greeny cane gets rejected. Does anyone know about this? I just couldn't believe that they would actually sell cane that looks like that. They must know that it won't play? I had to throw away the whole box. I opened another box that I had on hand, and it was better, but I'm still out $13. I really don't want to switch reed brands, I have tried all the new-fangled popular ones and I always come back to Vandoren for the sound. I was just wondering if anyone knew more about this. Thanks!

Did you try the brown cane, or did you just get disgusted by its looks?

Mindy LOOKS for the "brown ugly' cane in reeds. Many people feel that the "uglier" the cane is, the better the reed. I wish you had NOT thrown it away and sent them our way (even though she uses Black Masters)

Why didn''t you return it for credit or an exchange? You shouldn't be out anything.
D'Addario (North American wholesaler- importer) in Farmingdale, NY is a great company & they would have helped you "no questions asked". Best, mw

Lots of questions!

I have given many, many, many brown reeds a fair chance, and they often sound alright the first couple of days, but I have never ever had a reed like that play well for the long haul. They always get bright and edgy by the fourth day or so. Bad luck, or bad cane? I don't know?

How do I contact D'Addario to return the reeds? I didn't think reeds could be returned? After all, they have been in my reed water and also my oral cavity!

ClarinetBoy, are Australian dollars the same value as American? I couldn't imagine paying that much for a box of reeds! I would almost switch to trumpet! (ALmost)

Yes, Suzanne you can definitely contact D'Addario.

http://www.daddario.com

FWIW, I simply went to www.Google.com (a great search engine & the negine that Yahoo! uses, or was the last i checked) and typed "D'Addario" (without the quotation marks). It was the firsdt hit thatg cam up.

2nd, you don't have to go to the wholesaler. I would have gone back to my retailer first (unless it was a catalogue seller, in which case I would have gone directly to wholesaler, D Addario).

I own a business, too. I would _NEVER_ let any bad blood or feelings come between me, customer & a product in your situation. SURE, there could be situations where we'd have to sit down & talk a bit. : ) This isn't one of them, though.

Best,
mw
