Ton Kooiman: Etude 3 and Maestro
Author: Jimis4klar

Hello guys, I use the Etude 3 for some months and It's quite good.I can adjust the height of thumbrest, It gives comfort, ease on playing but I lack on making fast trilss compared to the stock clarinet thumbrest I had.. I'm thinking to upgrade to Maestro because It has much more adjustability to all It's parts, the thumb part doesn't move freely like on etude which I think is a big plus but again It's a tough decision to order It because It's very expensive.. What do you think I should do???

Both the Etude and the Maestro move the weight of the clarinet to the proximal phalanx of your thumb, while the distal phalanx still remains in contact with the base part of the thumb rest. This makes that you can't move your thumb as freely as you would be able to with a stock thumb rest. Since you're having issues with fast trills (I suppose right hand trills), I think that when playing with a stock thumb rest, you may not only be using your fingers to trill, but that there may be also some movement in your wrist, which wouldn't work that well with an Etude (or a Maestro) thumb rest.

I'm thinking the opposite of what you're saying.. Because the etude's thumb part moves freely, that's why I have problems with fast trills on the right hand. NO WAY! going back to stock clarinet's thumbrest!! Etude is superior on comfort and overall playing! I just got a very good price on Maestro and I'm gonna try it, I think this will make It all right because it has adjustability to all parts and that I like a lot!

There are 3 rows of holes on the mounting plate. Did you use the bottom row to place your screws into the same hole on the clarinet? Drilling in in a higher hole on your clarinet is the easiest way to go. You can also just move the movable rest up a little above the mounting plate. This works too. I have both Etude 2 and Maestro. I also have a thumbrest from Finland which will allow you to move the thumb around to get to the trill keys. This unfortunately is more expensive than the Maestro. If you use the Maestro, the same principle applies of just sliding it up and down at will. When adjusting the Maestro, both parts of the thumbrest must be level or you will put undue strain on your thumb. Your thumb must be horizontal.

Well, I didn't want to give the impression that a stock thumb rest would be better. As a matter of fact, I'm using an Etude 3 myself. I guess I should have paid more attention to your remark that the thumb part moves freely on the Etude. It obviously does when not using it, but I've set the adjusting screw such that when I am playing, there's actually very little movement left, and the clarinet is more or less anchored to my thumb. The Maestro obviously allows for more fine-tuning with respect to your preferred hand position.
