 Ian Herbert

Most of you probably haven’t heard of Ian, he was principal clarinet at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for about 40 years until his retirement in 1995. He’s 90 today and still playing really well which leads me to believe that keeping playing the clarinet may be the secret to a long, healthy life and the prevention of cognitive decline!

He’s a nice player. I heard him do the Jim Parker Concerto. More recently, and post-retirement, he’s done the theme tunes and sound tracks to some popular tv series with prominent clarinet parts.

Quite a few clarinetists have had very long playing and non-playing lives. Louis Cahuzac recorded the Nielsen and Hindemith concertos at age 76 and lived to 80.

Happy birthday Ian. Keep it up.
