 Clarinet Barrel Problem
Author: platinumdoor

The original barrel of my R-13 no longer fits. A little over a month ago, I really struggled to get the barrel on/off. I decided to use the barrel of my A clarinet instead and it seems to fit properly. However, now when I try to match my R-13 with the original barrel it no longer fits at all (about a 1/4 of an inch still remains between the barrel and the upper joint when pushed all the way together). I am unsure if the issue is my clarinet or the barrel- the original R-13 barrel fits perfectly on my A clarinet. At first, I thought this may be because of the transition into summer in my area causing the wood or tendon to expand. I plan on going to my normal repair-person however, any help or information as to what the issue is or how to resolve it would be appreciated. Thanks!

You are on the right track with regards to bringing this to a repairman. I'm not sure if you want to use the same barrel on both of your horns. If so have the repairman adjust the clarinet corks on both horns, replacement of both corks might be the best way, depending on the condition of the corks. You may also need to have the repairman remove some wood on the one clarinet, the tenon, at that joint which has probably swelled up. This is an easy fix actually, maybe around a 30 minute job to replace the corks, fix the swelling, so you can use the same barrel on both horns. This is not a common problem but it does happen, since wood is sensitive to moisture.

I have a similar problem with my clarinet, so I am using a hard rubber barrel for the moment. The hard rubber barrel fits fine, so I guess that it is most likely the wooden barrel that has swollen. I plan to bring the clarinet and barrel to a repairman when I have the opportunity.

I have a Buffet, which, as I understand, are know to have this problem. When I first got it I had to have a small amount of wood taken off to make it fit, but that was done in the winter. Now that it is summer, I guess that the barrel has swollen a bit again, so it will likely need a bit more wood taken off.

I think this can happen with any wood clarinet, especially a new or relatively new one in the summer. I don't think this is one that can be hung on Buffet in particular.

Repair people are very used to doing this adjustment.

Sounds like the problem is the inner shoulder of the tenon, since you can assemble it part of the way. This is the reason at least 95% of the time when this happens. The barrel fitting your other clarinets is another sign.

Check the A barrel on the Bb. If it's also difficult then it's almost definitely the tenon (even if you just feel some friction that shouldn't be there, doesn't have to be stuck or completely impossible to assemble).

It's possible but not that likely that there is a problem with the corks too. Maybe, but if there is, it's mostly a coincidence that it happened at the same time. Most often where both problem happen at the same time, it's because a player leaving the clarinet assembled too much, compressing the corks while also keeping the moisture in the joints.

It's most common with new clarinets, but I've seen clarinets where this happened even after decades.
