My 4 month old Selmer Presence has developed a slight buzzing sound on the altissimo C# and D. Only on these two notes. And it doesn't do it constantly but intermittingly. Has anybody had this experience or have any idea what is causing it? Thanks, R Small.

I would suspect it is the metal of some keys getting into touch/contact and generating the buzzing sounds. You can check with a "third hand" touching the metal during playing these notes. This then can be fixed by slightly bending the problematic metal parts so that there is no touch.

That has occurred to me. A sort of vibrating sound set off by the tone of alt. D and C#. Weird that it's just those two notes. Alt. Eb, E, F, etc. are fine. And the clarion notes just below (C, B, Bb< etc.) are fine.

Is long altissimo "F" free of buzz?
I was thinking maybe it has something to do with the right hand sliver key (need for swedging or some weirdness with the surface of the pad).

I'd be inclined to suspect that one of the pads is causing your problem. A split in the membrane can cause this.

I had a similar problem with such a buzzing sound accompanying the B5 and C6 (the highest notes in the clarion). I found out that it was the f-sharp/c-sharp lever for the left hand pinky. No visible metal contact somewhere. A drop of oil on the pin of the lever removed the sound completely. By the way, this (on my Buffet) is made of Teflon (not just plastic, as I was told).

I was gunna mention pads too. I've had the "covering" getting ripped or partially coming off the pad. Perhaps only those high notes have overtones that could cause the buzzing?

I had my tech check the clarinet out. He played it using his mpc and found no problem. Then I played using my mpc and I could hear it but he couldn't. So apparently it's not audible to a listener. Weird. It mostly has the problem when I when I play loud, pushing a lot of air through the horn. So maybe I need to play softer in the altissimo although the notes above D are fine. Anyway I can work around it for now. It's just a minor irritant that apparently is not audible to a listener. Meanwhile I think I'll try some other mouthpieces. Maybe a Pomarico black crystal. I'm using a Vandoren B45 Lyre now with a Vandoren 5JB for jazz.

Hmm. Maybe your tech is unable to hear high frequencies? I am pretty sure that it has to do with one of the levers. Maybe just try to oil all the pins and screws a little bit.

Both my tech and I are past 70 so we probably have some hearing loss. But I couldn't hear the buzz when he played so I don't think that's the issue. He thinks it might be a reed issue but I doubt that. Possibly my embouchure. I think my next step would be to try out another mpc or two, though I like both of the Vandorens a lot.

Hello Gatto. Turns out you're right. There is a tiny bit of play in the C#/F# key where it connects with the rod that connects to the pad/cup. So playing C# and D caused a slight metal on metal vibration which caused the buzzing. A drop of oil has cleared it up for now. Talk about an easy fix! Thanks a million.--R Small.
