 Airing out the case
Author: davyd
Date:   2020-06-30 15:10

It's been suggested that during this (prolonged) period of inactivity, that my clarinet cases should be opened periodically to allow them to air out.

Is this necessary? If so, how often, and for how long?

Your thoughts, please.

Probably no, although vacuuming out your case once a month is a great way to keep it clean and free of dust, mildew and bad smells. Simply leaving the case open will allow dust to settle inside.

Never gave it a thought. When I had 4 clarinets working (Bb, Eb, A, C) I used to practice a month at a time on each, so each would be case closed 3 months. All went well, but that's not 3 years.

Looking at it another way, just because you can’t play with others doesn’t mean you can’t play... You can dust off repertoire pieces, etudes etc that you don’t normally have time for, try some new ones, and play with accompaniment tracks or join in with recordings. There’s lots you can do to keep motivated, enjoy playing and keep the embouchure in trim for when the restrictions ease. Getting your instrument out regularly means it’s “business as usual” for the case...

As long as there is no bacterial farm or moisture inside the case, I see no reason why it should be opened and ventilated.
