The name of this piece is "Sonoran Desert Holiday." I don't know how many of u have played 1st Bb Clarinet on this song, but I played bass. I'm including this excerpt 2 c if it's actually playable. If u can play it, please record it and email it 2 me to prove that it's playable.

It IS playable. I used to play professionally (about 30 y. ago), and back then I could play it.
Assuming the tempo is not crazy fast.

Not so lucky.
According to Jerry Junkins, the tempo at 62 through "poco a poco ritardando" is...quarter note = 172 (ish).

But still workable with some woodshedding.
I wanted to add that it's one of those instances where composers push a section of instruments to the speed and technical limits to purposely achieve a bit of "frantic nature" to the sound. You'll notice though it is a background "pad" to the brass main theme in that moment and it is interpreted appropriately by Junkins.

Hi,
I can think of several compositions where the composer used a "pad" in the woodwinds (particularly the clarinets) to provide a backdrop. The clarinet part is really difficult in the last sections of Holsinger's Liturgical Dances, in the opening section of the 2nd clarinet in Rocky Point Holiday also by Nelson, and the truly challenging final sections of Grantham's Fantasy Variations.
All of these have a frantic nature for sure. I once asked the conductor about about the Grantham and the difficulties of playing it. He said that the composer just "wanted a wall of sound." I was certainly at my technical limit.

Ohh I am not sure about 172. At 120-130 it looks feasible.
