 Leblanc Opus A register tube

Hello all,

As fans of the Opus clarinets may know, there was some controversy that after a certain point in production, the Opus A was going out with a register tube that was longer than the one originally designed. I am not sure if this was accidental or intentional, and some of the details seem to be lost at this point. I am not sure if the Concerto A had this happen or not.

I spoke with Tom Ridenour about a year ago and he was pretty sure he did not have the correct tube in his excess parts anymore. So I'm looking at the possibility of either modifying the existing one or having it 3D printed.

I recall 1 or 2 people either on the BB or the mailing list who have had the tube switched out. I was hoping they might come forward and provide some measurements.

Thanks!

I have an "original Opus" A clarinet made in the late 1990s. I assume it has the correct register tube, as it has very good intonation and response.

The register tube has an internal diameter of about 3.1mm at the end of the tube closest to the pad.

I don't have the tools to measure the length without removing the tube. But based on a crude measurement, it's about 14.5mm - 15mm long. It's very obviously longer than the Bb's register tube

The register tube I have on an Opus II A in the 81XXX range is 15 mm long and is reverse conical from 3.0 to 2.8 mm (following air stream). I don't have the outer measurements.

This instrument was made in the early 2000s I believe but has a "long" tube, going well past the center of the bore.

I wouldn't want such a long and slender tube to be made in plastics. You'd have to use silk swabs only and be very gentle.

Thanks all, I'm going to see what Morrie can do to help me.

@Johan - I'm thinking most or all of the Opus II's have the longer tube. That extra length makes it easy to get the swab stuck if you're not careful, plus it makes the notes that are already prone to subtones on the A even moreso. At least, all of this has been my experience. As for 3D printed aspect, I was going to work with Ryan Pereira, who apparently has some kind of 3d printable material with metal filament he believes might be up to the job. Obviously if somebody has a stash of the originals then that's the direction I'm going :)
