or you may just decide that performing the Mozart concerto on a hand made basset clarinet created by a good friend is the best thing.

The article describes some of my own feelings about the many books I've read in my life. Obviously one retains comparatively little, yet maybe that only means those little things were especially important, even if inscrutably so.

With my English hopelessly Americanized, I'm not entirely sure what is meant here by "kit", but I'll guess it to refer to the collection of accessories a clarinetist accumulates. Perhaps the implication is that this mouthpiece or that ligature is played for a time, then set aside for another, with most of its characteristics soon forgotten.

Recently I had reason to backtrack one at a time through the half-dozen mouthpieces that have been my "best" for lengthy periods over time. In the process played each one for a day or so. It was illuminating - and a bit dismaying. It seemed to tell me I basically don't know what I'm doing.

"a perfect formulation of a problem is already half its solution."

What a great quote! (from Tony's shared URL)

Sometimes I feel as if "a perfect formulation of a problem" is nearly the entire complex part of the process.

I've wasted far too much time working with imperfect formulations. Eventually, I'll arrive at a similar conclusion, but only after lots of extra work and confusion.

Thanks for sharing the article, Tony!

Now I REALLY feel like I’ve wasted my life. I agree 100% about reading.
