The Clarinet BBoard

Hi, looking for a clarinet for my middle-schooler who has a year of clarinet playing under his belt.
Considering a used 1971 Selmer 10 (W series). Claimed to be in good condition that doesn't need new pads and has been well maintained (sold by a claimed retired woodwind teacher).
Also considering a refurbished Yamaha YCL-34 with all new pads + Vandoren B45 Mouthpiece.
Both would be online sales. I know it's a gamble. I like buying music instruments. I'm a DIYer-- I once bought a used accordion on eBay and proceeded to learn how to completely disassemble and re-wax/re-tune reeds.
Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

The Series 10 is a pro level clarinet - the YCL-34 is a student model.
The Selmer will be the better one long term.

Both are nice instruments, but I agree with Chris about the Selmer. Those are very nice

Get the Selmer. Avoid a B45. A more medium mouthpiece is better.

Agreed with the above posts. the selmer will be a better quality instrument. Take it to a qualified repairer for any issues rather than attempting DIY. and the B45 is not a good MP choice for a beginner- or indeed most others in my opinion!
stay well!

Thanks everyone. The Selmer also comes with a B45. Any suggestion for a replacement mouthpiece?

Fobes Debut is an excellent choice for someone at his level.

The Selmer I'm considering has been modified with an extra set of thumb-rest holes (to customize position). And the pinky keys have a temporary material to increase the reach (seller says material can be removed).
I assume an extra set of thumb-rest holes is not a huge deal as I imagine they could be filled if desired (?).
Appreciate all comments here!

As long as they don't go through into the bore they shouldn't present a problem. I agree with the recommendation for the Fobes Debut.

I agree about a more medium mouthpiece than the B45 (I use a Vandoren 5RV). Used B45 decades ago as it was the thing to do. Found something better for me -- the old VanD V360 (no longer made).
I can't argue about the Selmer advice. You didn't mention prices. Personally I prefer the feel of the Yamaha keys (particularly pinky keys), but that's very personal preference and the Yamaha in question is a student model. There also is the idea of buying a student clarinet new-- not very pricey these days I think.

Well the Selmer sold to someone else. (for $400)
Oh well
Now considering refurbished Noblet 40 or Selmer CL-200 for the $250 price range. I'm guessing they are comparable.

Remember the old adage "He who hesitates is lost" when considering which clarinet tp buy.
The Noblet 40 and the Selmer CL200 are both quite good student-level instruments. Given the choice I'd prefer the Noblet, but there's not much in it.

The Noblet is definitely the better of the two - they're built like tanks.
