 Evette MM vs E&S MM

First off, let me say that I know nothing about clarinets. I have spent hours upon hours researching the topic of the master model instruments and keep running into conflicting information.

My daughter is going to middle school next year and will be playing a clarinet (an E11 is preferred). I could not swallow renting a new clarinet and decided to buy my daughter an older clarinet. Long story short, I now have my hands on two clarinets (one Evette Master Model - D24xxx and one E&S Master Model - 54xxx (no leading letter)).

Can you tell me more about these instruments? From my research, it appears that the Evette MM is a 1972 horn roughly equivalent to an E12. It also appears that the E&S MM may be an R13 reject built in the late 70's or early 80's. If this is not correct, please enlighten me.

I spoke with a local shop who said they are both similar to an E11. The shop also warned that if the school requests students to have an E11, they may not allow my daughter to play these other models (potential whoops ;).

Can you post pictures? The E&S you have is possibly one of the very very few Buffet R13 rejects, the serial number does fall in line with a very early R13. I've only seen one other one. Most of the R13 rejects were labeled "Academy Model". I do not know the difference between the Evette MM and the E&S MM, but E&S clarinets in general tend to have a bit better intonation.

In either case the E&S is the better of the two, If it is an R13 reject it will be a good intermediate to professional level clarinet well above the E11 depending on what exactly it was rejected for. If it is not an R13 reject it would still be a good intermediate level instrument.

Yeah that's an R13. If anything I would say that's almost too good of an instrument for a middle school student. Make sure your daughter takes really good care of it as these things have been going up in value. Right now it's probably worth around $800-$1000. Make sure your daughter swabs it out after every single use to keep the bore in good shape. Also it looks like it could use some bore oil. This was definitely a good find!

Thanks for confirming!

Can you enlighten me as to what you are looking at in the pictures to tell the difference?

It sounds like I will be into both instruments for $450 each once both are fully repaired. I am assuming this one will need new pads and corks but I have not taken it into the shop yet (they have the Evette MM right now).

I guess I will have her use the Evette MM for now and have the E&S MM available for down the road.

That sounds like a good plan, the Evette would be a great instrument until she gets to high school.

I'm mostly looking at the details of the keywork. I have a 1955 R13 myself so I can confirm the keywork looks identical. Some key features that tell me it's an R13 include:

•Separate post for A and G# keys
•Flat sprint for C#/G# key
•Cutout for RH pinky keys (A bit hard to see in the picture but I think I can see it)
•Needle spring attached directly to F#/C# key

Evettes can have some of these features but not all of them. The serial number however is the biggest giveaway.
