 M14 mouthpiece

What happened to it? Vandoren doesn't discuss it on their website anymore. Is it vastly different from either the M13 lyre or the M15?

They discontinued it. I don';t think it was as popular as they hoped it might be. I was really annoyed when I found out because I tried one once, and I really liked it. I have tried the other vandoren mouthpieces and I liked the M14 the best. I didn't buy one at the time because I was happy with my own mouthpiece...but now that I'm not happy with my mouthpiece and I can't find an M14 as a spare, I'm really annoyed.

I own both M14 and M15 (M13 & M13L as well). As between M14 and M15, I feel M15 can give you a deeper and darker sound. For some softer reeds, they work perfectly OK on M15 but not M14 as they are felt too soft. I think unless your clarinet has a stronger resistent (like Selmer Signature), M15 is a better choice.

I used to sell Vandorens on eBay all the time (until my distributer moved to a different company), and had several M14s. They were hard to sell. I thought they were a bit difficult for most people to play. The M13Lyre was a much better mouthpiece--although I've heard good things about the M15.

I'll bet you could still find an M14 at Mars Music or from someone like International Musical Suppliers.

I have tried many M13, M13Lyre, M14 and M15 when looking into replacing my mouthpiece.
It was a close call between the M13Lyre and M15. The M15 gave a bit of a more open feel (even if the specs don't really agree with the feel) and I found it clearly more resonant and colourful than the others but might have lacked a bit of the M13Lyre sweetness. As for the M14 I found it both resistant and dull....

My 2 cents,
-S

I have to agree about the "resistant and dull" on the M14.

I own the M15 and the M13 lyre, the M15 is my favorite...easy play, deep sound.
I tried to purchase the M14, no luck. International Music suppliers is all out!!

Phil Muncy had a few M14s a couple of weeks ago.

I found the M14 to be unrewarding and the M13 to be very flexible.

It had a nice 'pocket' but needed to be driven hard to get there.

Pianissimo? - Fogeddaboudit.

The M13s around are plentiful and can be inexpensive.
Phil and Jan Muncy have a decent trial policy (no scratches, clear restocking fee) to help make the decision easier.

Be advised that these are machine made with little hand tuning, so they can vary from one to the next.
