Hi,

I have been fooling around taking photos of the inside of reeds with my microscope. I thought I would put the photos up just in case anyone else finds them interesting.

If not, that's good too. :-)

and the last few.

The photos are of a Vandoren V12 reed (strength 5) and a Rigotti Gold 2.5 light reed snapped in half to show the vascular bundles of the reed and the surrounding tissue exposed.

The thing that I take from the photos is that the vascular bundles of the stronger V12 reed seem to be much stronger themselves and have torn a much bigger hole in the tissure of the reed when I snapped it in half. I don't know if the surrounding tissue it also different.

That's awesome. It would be interesting to see a more extensive line up just to see how much variety you can get in a pack, but that's my academia brain talking, the rest of me is just glad you posted this for us to look at.

Hi Wildschwa,

That's a really interesting thought. It might be nice to take one really good reed and one that I find too hard to play and look inside to see whether there are visible differences, as a first step.

I'm glad you liked the photos. I enjoying finding out what is going on inside the reeds. I think I ought to find out how to stain them so I can see the different tissues too.
