 Good/bad years for E11?
Author: m1964

Hi,
I have read that on E11 Buffet was installing not threaded posts into the wood by press-fitting.
Does anyone know when Buffet started doing it? Did they ever come back to threaded posts?

Thanks

The E11 to avoid is the E11 France. If the France (or E11) part of the logo is worn... maybe it has Made in France stamped somewhere... not sure.

Before that was the E11 made in Germany (by Schreiber) which is fine. It only says E11 but usually has Made in Germany on the back. After that they changed to the E12F (which is about the same as the E11 France but with the issue fixed).

Maybe worth mentioning that the E11 France was a huge release, with Buffet having a website just for that model and advertising the non-threaded posts as an advantage (easy to repair, etc.).
In reality it was a major design flaw, so many complaints, and after just a few years they discontinued it and removed any mention of it they could (the website, etc.).

The E11 France is a rare case where they actually discontinued a model. The original E11 with threaded posts is still sold. The E11 France became the E12F with threaded posts. The E11 F is easy to recognize – every post has a flange to keep it from turning.

I made a mistake in my last post. It is the E11F (bad model that has a flange for every post.

Hi Steven,
Thanks for clarification- it looks like the F in E11 was added to show that the clarinet was made in France.
Anyway, the clarinet I was looking at has "Made in France" stamped on the barrel under the Buffet logo so it is probably one of those "no good" examples.
I just fixed an Evette hoping it could be my back-up/outdoors instrument but it sounds really like a student instrument- better than a plastic Artley I have but not even close to my R13.
So now I am looking for a project clarinet again- hoping that an E11 or E12 probably would sound a little better than the Evette.
Thanks again.

I just repaired a Yamaha YCL-250 (plastic model) and was very happy with the sound. Perhaps some others can add their input. I know one military band clarinetist that plays it outside because the Greenlines are too heavy for her.

Hi Steven,
Thanks for the reply- I understand that Yamahas have key work similar to Buffet's so switching would not be a problem.
Interestingly, yesterday, after putting some "final touches" on the Evette, I started playing it - seems like the sound is "opening up".
I am starting to hear some color in its tone, and the resistance is similar to my Buffet. Which is an R13P, so any comparison to the Evette is unfair.
I think I need to come down in my clarinet search and maybe go and clean my bicycle...or repaint my living room.
I do enjoy fixing clarinets much more than painting rooms.
