Hi, All --
In a quest to keep myself from becoming entirely stir-crazy during the pandemic-- some would say that that ship has already sailed -- I got to thinking about online programs like Zoom or Google Hangouts and wondered if they could be used for small groups to get together and play together. I'm thinking this could be good for small ensembles or for holding band sectionals. (I know that lots of teachers are moving toward offering online classes, but am not sure if the technology allows for playing together in real time.)
Do any of you have an experience trying this sort of thing? Is it viable? Recommendations for sites to try?

Unfortunately it is not. There is always some delay over the internet. Until we have quantum computers we are probably stuck with sending recordings to each other to play with. This is a big top of discussion among music teachers online this past week or two. There is a way to do it as audio only, but only if the tempo is not too fast and if everybody has a super premium internet connection. I'm going to be tempted to do something on my back patio soon with appropriate social distancing....

Wish I could find (if I still have) my old "Music Minus One" solo records from the early 70s. Anyone remember those?

Some programs allow playing sort of in sync by being less in sync and increasing the delay. For example some type of groove, etc. I thought it might allow music that doesn't have to be synchronized and without a beat, but maybe there is a click track that is impossible to remove, not sure. It wouldn't work for two part classical piece anyway. I guess it might also be weird if it plays your part in a delay, so you hear yourself twice. I haven't tried it anyway so not sure.

There are always duets. Record yourself playing one track and on playback, you play the other part. With another device recording that duet, you could make it a trio and on an on...
