 Clarinet Identification
Author: Galen Green

Hello Everyone,

I was recently given a Clarinet in Bb from an elderly friend of mine that I would like to try and identify if possible for interest's sake.

My Friend says that must have been made before around 1950.
It doesn't have any form of brand name and the only markings are "Made in England and the serial number 158227 and two-digit numbers under most of the keys.

It seems to resemble some Boosey & Hawkes clarinets but I'm not sure.

It's wooden and seems to be made well and it even still plays perfectly although the pads look very aged.

Thank's for looking!
Regards
Galen

Little strange- serial # is completely intact but no logo...
The "auction site" has 2 listings like yours both say "probably made by B&H".

Thank you for your reply,
there is absolutely no sign of any logo so it probably never had one unless it was painted on or something.
Do you have a link to the "auction site"?
Best regards
Galen

Boosey and Hawkes. From the body rings it looks like an Edgware, made in 1975. I've come across several B & H clarinets that have no model name on them. I have an Emperor without markings. Some of these unmarked instruments were made under military contracts, this may be one such.

This is definitely a Boosey & Hawkes. Model Edgware or Emperor. It has the old 'Gothic' style keywork and also the serial# indicates that it dates from somewhere in the 50's or early 60's.

I don't think it's an Edgware, judging from the bell. I'd say a 926 ("Imperial").

The rings are wrong for a 926 or Emperor, but right for an Edgware. The bell is the same as my Emperor and my 926's, and also an Edgware that I no longer have. I think that some B & H claris intended for the US market had ringed bells, but that one is what I know as a standard B & H bell. I've seen the same bell on Besson-labelled claris, which are Edgwares under another name.
I have 2 number lists. One shows the date as 1975, the other shows between 1955 and 1960. Your choice.

In 1975 B&H serial# were already around the 400.000 range. So I vote for your 2nd list...
