I have heard many good bands over the years in person and in recordings but this morning my local NPR station played this John Phillip Sousa arrangement of Wagner's Tannhauser Overture rendered by the US Marine Band of 1995 and........

I wept

Thanks Paul, that gets added to my favorites, where there's already a number of Marine Band performances listed. Sousa wrote the awesome transcription. It sounds extremely hard, and they really nailed it. World class musicians in that band, equal with members of major orchestras.

The liner notes say that the E-Flat clarinet was John Barclay.
I played with John Barclay one summer during the 1980's in a
wind ensemble. I also heard John Barclay play the first movement of Weber's
1st Clarinet concerto and Beethoven's Septet that summer.
I think John was still in high school at the time and was very good.

This should be required listening in school bands around the country. A wonderful reminder of how things can be when one is dealing with a gifted conductor and a group of wonderfully talented musicians. Truly an inspiring recording!
