Weber Concertino - I did it!

Hello everyone,

yes, I shall dare to post this record of me playing it with my local amateur orchestra. I'm trembling as I write these lines, knowing that a pro would mangle me for what I did, but keep in mind I can only play the clarinet in my free time. That being said, it was a lot of fun! And yes, I can hear every single mistake. And yes, the orchestra isn't so good at following my tempo, but I think we did well. And yes, my tempo might change more than I intend, haha.
With this in mind, I'll probably enjoy to know what you guys think. This has been my very first solo concerto with an actualy orchestra and it was an insane experience!

Bravo!

Gosh I'd say that was really good! Pitch is always a two way street and you have that down in spades. Also your use of dynamics is great.

The only quick fix I'd throw out would be to be mindful of the ends of some notes (heard it early in the introduction but spotty though some of the other variations) which even if written to be short, should have more taper and less "clippiness"......to coin a phrase.

But a live performance of which to be proud.

Did you use a Zoom recorder for this?

Well done! Really Nice Sound, played in tune! I enjoyed hearing your performance.

Sometimes you don't have to push the speed and have the articulation spotty. Slow it down just a shade and most likely the articulation will be cleaner and match your nice sound and excellent pitch. As already said, play some of these notes to its full value, don't shorten the length. It a note is a 1/2 note don't give it 2 beats, but much closer to 3 beats.

Thanks for posting!

Well done !!!

Also I really love " the orchestra isnt so good at following my tempo"
A real classic phrase that i am already preparing to plagiarise whenever i need. This need not be limited to just solos and cadenzas.!

Kudos, my friend. That is a special peace in my life...first heard the snobby 1st player in my 9th grade orchestra do it (I was 2nd chair) and was my audition peace in 1999 (Univ of Pacific, Stockton, California). I played it solo, without accompaniment, during my audition, on stage, in front of two faculty in a large empty auditorium...I passed enough to get into the school's music therapy program...I apologize if I am talking about myself too much and not about you...I'm sure it was a positive emotional experience for you. Please don't beat yourself up about your errors...Gosh only knows how much I did that. It's for love and passion and emotion. Enjoy!!!!!

Thanks for your positive feedback, guys! I’m humbled!!

Paul,

Yes, it’s a Zoom recorder. The location was a church with a wooden ceiling, very dry acoustics. Maybe I should’ve taken that into account a bit more...

Bob,
Thanks for the compliment regarding my tuning, too. Part of this is thanks to my new Gleichweit B7-1, which is so great I feel I finally achieved „mouthpeace“. Sorry I didn’t get back to you re modified Vandorens, the Gleichweit simply left me completely satisfied.

Late_returner,

You can’t imagine the struggle we had, any rubato(ish) passage I needed to make so clear to them and move like a maniac, otherwise they wouldn’t recognize „my tempo“. Particularly difficult with the first movement, where the orchestra has so often happened to push me during rehearsals. That being said, it turned out fine, I suppose. And they put up with me and my... issues, too, so I’m happy we worked things out.

oldreedguy,

This piece being special to you, I‘ve no issues with you talking about your past ;) I think particular pieces may touch us forever, in a sense that we develop a relationship with them over the course of years, which of course is subject to a continuous change, just like our relationships with people. With your experience reaching a few more years back than mine, I’m of course glad to hear what you have to say!

My teacher seems to be pleased too, I think, but of course he‘ll find more errors than I‘ve noticed myself, haha.
For now, the RC has rested in its case and I’ve tried to focus the work/other stuff, but I did notice today that this experience had an to impact on my playing when I practised a bit today. Just to think what a really good professional goes through on a regular basis!

No criticism of the recording at all! In fact it sounds really good. And I would even say slightly dry for acoustics is much preferable to slightly too reverberant (read....muddy).

As for tempos, this is an issue that resides SOLELY between you and the conductor. If you both had planned a "sit down" where you worked out your interpretation of the piece in advance (ideal and perhaps there was not the time or the willingness from both parties), that would have taken care of the "disparities." And actually sometimes even with better prep, things don't always go as planned in performance. So I'd take this one as a big WIN (nothing particularly out of kilter) and just keep up the great work!

I don't know very much about classical music but I think it sounds wonderful. I wouldn't probably ever have heard this piece if you hadn't played it and posted it on here, so you definitely changed one person's life by playing it. :-)
