What is the difference between an A clarinet barrel and a B flat barrel of the same length?

That depends on the horn. Buffet A clarinets have a narrower bore (however, many folks just use a Bb barrel switching one horn for the other). Yamahas (the CSG at least) have identical bores......no difference.
I cannot speak to the rest of the brands out there but you get the idea. You should check with the manufacturer on the model you use and decide what to do trom there.

When I was doing a lot of orchestral work I used the same barrel for my Buffet Bb & A, as did others I played with. I never gave this a thought (until now).

Some makers use a different bore and taper for Bb and A barrels, while others say their barrels can be used on either. Of those that I have used, generally the A bore is slightly smaller. I have always found it works best for me to use different barrels on each. I have found response, evenness of tone and intonation to be slightly better for me in that configuration. It all depends on what works for you and your set up.

just for info, while they are not a perfect matched set my vintage Marigaux A & Bb each have their own barrels, le A being a few mm shorter and the bore slightly bigger than the Bb. The A may not be the original barrel as it is not stamped but it plays fine. They arrived in their original classic 'savonette' style leather case that is designed to receive the instruments half assembled - barrel+left hand, bell+right hand joint. So it is obvious they were meant to each have their own barrel. They both like the same mp however (one of my refaced vintage 2RV, although they came with one I didn't like and can"t remember what it was) and both are delightful, engaging instruments to play.
