I just played through this great quartet by Todd Mastric called "Riflessione" it was for three Bb's and a bass it was REALLY nice! He did another one called "Canzonz" that had multi meters and was a lot of fun to play too. You can get his stuff from harmonyhawkmp.com only. For some reason I haven't ever been able to find it in a store!
Have you played any good quartets lately? For what instrumentation?

we played Quartet in F by Carl Bohm for contest, got a perfect score and Outstanding Performance, so we got to go play it again at a nifty little recital 2 weeks after contest. It wasn't incredibly hard, for 3 Bbs and a bass(me), but it was a good little quartet

I second her suggestion, I loved that piece at first we played the bass part on a b flat but then we got an excellent bass player who really brought out the part. But that first part is a real challange. But it was great, we made a one, too!

Okay here's the BIG question for your quarteters out there! What do you think the "standard" clarinet quartet should be? Three Bb's and Bass (which is probably the easiest to get together), or Two Bb's, Alto and Bass? (which can be a challenge to get together since so few people play the Alto anymore.)
There are good things to say about both grouping but which one should be standard?
My vote is for Three Bb's and a Bass!

JLovelace:
I can't speak on behalf of all clarinet quartets, but the ones that I have played have actually come with 5 parts. 1st Bb, 2nd Bb, Alto, 3rd Bb (sub. for Alto), and Bass, so you can have it both ways, depending on who's around!

Actually, that would be a clarinet quintet, not a quartet!

Sara --
Way to catch me on the specifics! :-)
The way I meant my post to be interpreted is that with the parts written as such, a quartet could be comprised of either 3 Bb's and a bass or 2 Bb's, an alto, and a bass. The 3rd clarinet and alto clarinet would play similar roles in each version of the quartet by playing the same musical line.
Just a little clarification, thought I'm sure most everybody understood it the first time :-)

Go Alto! - It adds more color and a different tone, the diversity makes things nicer, I think. =)
I recently played The Heavens Are Telling by Haydn with a flute, trumpet, Bb soprano clar, and a trombone for a little school thing. We found the music and put it together in like.. 3 10-minute rehersals. It was fairly easy, but it sounded neat, and everyone complimented the unique musical arrangements.
