I did a forum search but had not found the answer to my dilemma so decided to post a new question.
I am looking to get a cheap but half-decent back-up clarinet for those 2 times a year when I need to play outside and also have it just in case something would happen to my primary instrument just before concerts.
I have an opportunity to see an Evette&Shaeffer with K2xxx serial number. It is NOT a master model. The seller claims he does not play but says there are no cracks.
The clarinet has shared throat G#/A post.
The thrill keys guard is stamped flat triangular shaped. That's all I can see in the pictures.
Right pinky keys have plating worn off.
My question: is there any way to check for tone holes and lose posts without taking it apart?
The seller may not like the idea of a stranger breaking his instrument…
Are there any tone holes that are more susceptible to damage? Posts most likely be lose?
How is intonation on this old instruments?
I can repad a clarinet, change tenon corks, maybe a spring or two but I cannot refinish or undercut a tone hole or swedge a key.
Or, should I just look for a more recent e12?

About 1.5 years ago, I sold an E12 to finance an R13- regretting it now since that clarinet was in excellent condition.

Okay, so based on the serial number, and your description of some of the features, this horn was likely made in 1947 or '48. So if it's important to you to have an R13 bore, for a horn this age likely needing work, I'd move on. I've never played a pre-R13 Evette Schaeffer, but have played a pre-R13 Buffet. It will likely play "nice" once fixed up, but will NOT have the "ping" and resonance we expect from Buffets.
I would (and did) look for a more recent Evette Schaeffer or E13.

I know it was a typo, but it struck me that using those keys might be a thrill in many situations.
