Does anyone know of information that would help establish the approximate manufacturing dates of Marigaux clarinets? I have 721 and 4928.

Assuming that they had a single set of serial numbers for all woodwind, that places serial 1359 in 1950. SML were formed in 1934. If we assume that nothing much happened during the War, then that's 136 instruments per working year up till 1950, so 721 might be just pre-War. If they carried on at the same rate, then 4928 wouldn't be reached till 1976. But that's undoubtedly an overerestimate, as production would have sped up with post-War demand. Buffet made 3000 per year before the War but were up to 5000 annually by the mid-1960s. Scaling SML production by the same factor, you get maybe 230 per year after 1950, so you'd reach 4928 in 1965.

This gives oboe serial 8500 as being 1977. That's 264 per year since 1950, so then 4928 might be as early as 1963.

Hi John. Thanks for this info!!! Just observing the case and other details of the two clarinets, it looks like my #721 was made in the 1930s. That case is a pouchette with the leather handle identical to those that came with mid-1930s Buffets. Aspects of the keywork (German silver, triangular trill key guide) also point to a pre-war instrument. The #4928 has a 1950s-style case, square with bakelite handle. The ketwork is plated, with more contemporary features, but still sturdier-looking than later Marigaux clarinets.
Good to know they started in 1934. I thought it was 1936.

I have a lovely set of Marigaux; the Bb is N° 5322 (the A is in the shop getting new pads right now). Looking at the wood from the different angles of cuts available in the bell, it's just the most wonderfully dark smooth fine & evenly pored wood I've ever seen.

They're fabulous clarinets! I feel very fortunate to have mine. Your serial # is not far from mine. I'd love it if you could post pictures, particularly of the barrel, throat G# key, logos, and bridge key.
