I recently recieved a plastic clarinet as a gift. I'm just now getting around to finding out what it's worth. I can't quite decipher the brand because it includes three names on it, one of which is Selmer. Here's it's description.
Standard Plastic Bb Clarinet
On the bell: BUNDY, Resonite, Selmer, USA (I'm assuming It's a Bundy Resonite recorder, which would be manufactured by Selmer, I guess)
Serial #: 3772** I'd rather not give off the last two digits.
If anyone has any information on it's worth, or even if they can tell me whether it's a student or intermediate model, it would be much appreciated. It plays okay and I'm not having much difficult with anything. I'm just not sure if it's a very prestigious model.
Thanks in advance!!

I would say in my humble opinion that it is not a prestigious model. I have a Selmer Bundy and I paid a grand totol of $120.00 for it including a cork job.
My serial number is 6882** and I think mine is pretty old but I am just guessing at age a 1977 from the sneezy table of serial numbers.
Yours figures to date back to about 1962'ish from the same list of serial numbes here on sneezy.
Selmer is a fine clarinet manufacturer and a Bundy is the entry level student line instrument. It is very fine to learn on and to march in parades and play at football games in the snow and rain.
Everybody should have a plastic clarinet to augment any fancy wooden job they have in case of the need to play in extreme or inclement weather.
From the ...Is there a clarinet worth a $1,000,000 discussion ... if there is this probably isn't it.
So enjoy it and pass it along to a kid if you outgrow it.

Why don't you want to give the whole serial number? Is it hot?
You say it's a gift. What do you care what it's worth? It's the thought that counts :]

The Selmer Bundy is a student model clarinet. Selmer's are one of the four recommended brands on this bulletin board.
The Bundy line has been discontinued but the equivalent student plastic Selmer can be purchased new from the major internet/mail order dealers for under $400. Used ones generally go for under $100 on the eBay auction site.
ron, many people do not like to list the full serial number because there have been cases where another party has made a false claim that it was stolen. And it was proven that these claims were false. But to avoid the hassle, people simply don't list the full serial number in a public place such as auctions, bulletin boards, newsgroups, etc.

I shoulda put a winkie after that response. Apology. I meant it for dry humor.
When the false claim you mention happened, did the other party try to claim the horn, or something? I never woulda thought of that - theft by cyber number robbery. I can see the point of not listing a serial number... I guess, yeh, it could turn into an ugly hassle. Now I'm glad I asked the question though. I never have and never will divulge a serial number of anything in a public place. Kinda like covering your ATM number, huh? Seems to me that scammers and slicksters are cropping up everywhere, often in the least likely places a hick like me would think to look out for. Now, even your horn could be a target : I mean, a person says, 'that's *my* instrument. see here? i have the serial number of it! ' Wow, whatta y' gonna do then?
I wonder how many people keep a copy of their instrument(s) serial number(s) and proof that they bought it. I don't. I keep careful records of horns I work on for other people (I don't wanta get 'em mixed up -- but, my own... no. Never have. What an awful admission....
That may be a good topic to post here.

Ron B.,
"Seems to me that scammers and slicksters are cropping up everywhere, often in the

I think they have always been there and were just waiting for cyberspace to happen.

I also have a question about purchasing clarinets. Would it be better to purchase a Selmer 300 plastic clarinet for $320 or a Selmer wooden clarinet for $450? Both are new and would be for an 8th grader who has been playing for 10 months and is pretty talented (according to his teacher).

What is he using now? Mouthpiece and reeds actually make more of a difference than anything else. So you might just want to upgrade those for now. Will he be marching? You might want a good plastic one now and then in a couple of years, if his interest warrants, then get a high end intermediate or entry level pro horn. Ten months is probably a bit early to get an expensive horn.
The $450 wooden Selmer would be an entry level intermediate and wouldn't be that much different than the Selmer 300.

Thanks for the info. I was just curious. So Bundy is actually a discontinued line of student models? Sounds like if I have any kids I can give them something to start on. I have to admit, it does feel like an old student model now that I think about it, but I use a precision mouthpeice and my own personal choice of reeds that work best for me (LaVoz) and that seems to make it sound better. I agree with Dee that it's more the mouthpeice and reeds that determine the sound anyways. Even if it Is a relatively inexpensive student model, I actually have grown fond of this horn and am very glad I chose not to give out the last two digits of my seial number!!

Bundy clarinet's on eBay average $30 to $100, depending on condition. Greatr for practicing. The Bundy 577 Resonite model brings a bit more, i think, than the plain ole Bundy. Best, mw
