 Death of Guy Deplus
Author: ruben
Date:   2020-01-14 20:18

I have just heard of the passing of the French master, Guy Deplus. He taught at the Paris Conservatory, where he had Philippe Cuper and Paul Meyer as students. If I remember correctly, he was also behind the design of the Vandoren B40 mouthpiece, arguably the world's most used. He was a major influence in France and not just in France, as he had many foreign students until a very late age. Rest in peace.

Deplus is an important part of the history of the clarinet. Not only the B40 but the Buffet Tosca, Festival, and RC Prestige were designed with his input. He was a member of the pioneering music group, Concerts du Domaine Musical formed by Pierre Boulez, and many people had their first experience of Messiaen's music from listening to Deplus's renditions. Here are a couple of his performances (Solo du Concours and the Debussy Rhapsody):

One of the earliest recordings of clarinet music I bought (I must have been about 12 at the time - early 70's) was of Guy Deplus playing the Stravinski Three Pieces. Wonderful recording. Sorry to hear of his passing.

I loved his recording of Stravinsky's Three Pieces.
A great ambassador of the clarinet.

Like almost any clarinet player I've heard a gazillion versions of the Mozart concerto. The best was at a live concert of Guy Deplus (he only played the 2nd movement).

Wonderful clarinetist and a very fine man. I sent him an e-mail asking about information on the Solo de Concours for the National Conservatoire and he sent me the most detailed response, hand-written, I could have asked for. When I met Jean-Marie Paul he said that this was just how Guy was. A fine man and a marvelous musician.
