older Rico reed-case has gone sticky on the outside!
Author: PeterinToronto 2017

Hi everyone,

I have an older Rico reed-case, from I think when these first came out. It has fixed plastic arches to hold the reeds in place, instead of the current rubber bands. I took this out to look at it after a few years in a drawer, and the external finish has gone sticky/tacky.

Does anyone know how to clean this off, if it can be cleaned away?

Thanks a lot,

Peter

I would probably start mild and use some dish detergent or even put it in the dishwasher. If that didn't work, I would probably try some solvent based kind of product like Goo Gone.

My hunch is that nothing will work. I’ve had plastics rubbers do that before.

It’s not something external that’s on it, it’s what the material does

It can't be saved.

It also happened to the one I bought which was on my shelf for decades.

I just threw it away (since I never particularly liked it to start with)

Cheap plastic was apparently used.

Same is true of the older "folding" version of Korg's top of the line tuner. I still have it and occassionally still put up with it.....great analogue meter! But that's the way it will remain.

I found this happening to mine recently. They have what I think of a called a ‘soft touch’ finish. I’d always thought this was a coating to the plastic as you find it on some parts of plastic objects, not always a complete covering. After all, the inside of these cases remains as it was. Anyway, it seems those of us who bought them were a soft touch as well.

Thanks a lot for the replies everyone, I laughed out loud at that 'soft touch' above! I might try wrapping it in plastic kitchen wrap to coat over the stickiness, and then cutting the sides so that it will open. But I may just toss it as some of you have also done!

Thanks again,

Peter
