German facing on an E flat Boehm mouthpiece
Author: Reformed

Has anyone tried a German facing on a French-style E flat Boehm mouthpiece?

Or even know where such a beast could be found!?

On my Reform Boehms (Bb &A), I am more than happy with several German mouthpieces with tip opening about 0.95mm and length of about 24/25mm.

I have a Yamaha YCL-681 Eb which tunes well with a Vandoren B40 Eb mouthpiece, but the different style of blowing to my reform Bb mouthpieces puts me off any serious efforts on E flat.

I am not sure I could justify the cost and multi-year wait for a new Reform Eb instrument.

Of course, there are plenty of other musicians who say that reducing the Eb clarinettist population is no bad thing - I'd like to prove them wrong!

Custom make a mouthpiece?

Not exactly the same but, I got a Viennese size + facing mouthpiece bored to French dimensions and tenons for my standard clarinet.

I am not familiar enough with all the Eb horn dimensions across the German/French divide, however on Bb it is easy enough to take down the tenon of the German mouthpiece (both length and diameter) the 1mm to make them fit their French counterpart. There is another layer of pitch adjustment there, but it is slight and doable (the German mouthpiece is longer than the French and the difference comes in that the third register notes are a little flatter....but not horribly so).

I'd say, see what you get with a straight up Wurlitzer mouthpiece from Thomann.de and let us know how it goes!

Thanks all, modifying the bore on a German mouthpiece is probably the way to go.

From https://www.gleichweit-mundstuecke.com/en/mouthpieces/eb-clarinet-german/28/gleichweit-jg?number=GW10014.1&c=95 - it looks like the German Eb bore is very small at 13.2mm!

My Vandoren B40 is 14.0mm at the bottom of the tenon.

You can reface anything within reason. So if you want a german facing it's not hard to do. If you have a quality reamer this too makes it easy to rebore mouthpieces.

I was surprised, recently, when I discovered how much easier it was to play my R13 Eb clarinet (with a Vandoren mpc + French reeds) since I changed to Reform Boehm two+ years ago.

I think the major point of departure to your situation is that I now play Austrian mouthpieces which are significantly different from the German approach.

I appreciate your point on the delivery of the wind -- that difference was the purpose of my switch to the Reform-Boehm. I don't find myself making significant adjustments backwards when playing the Eb, but I do respond to "what the instrument tells me to do".

Definitely interested in hearing about the outcome of modifying a German mpc!

@bob

Can you recommend a suitable reamer?
