Ed, I have the Bach Suites for cello as well. You are correct that they are an excellent way to learn to read bass clef. Could you say more about the "musical reasons" you allude to in your post?

Playing the suites as written in bass clef without transposition, uses the low C of the bass clarinet instead of the low D as lowest note, and seems to resonate better, at least on my instrument...
