 Old Soprano sax
Author: Roy Jacobsen

My cousin has on old soprano sax, inherited from his grandfather. The sax was probably bought sometimes around 1940 here in nothern Norway. The engravings says : RENE GUENOT - 10. Rue BEAUREPAIRE - PARIS - ESSAYÉ PAR L. MEYÉR. GARDE REPUBLICANE 659.
I can't find it listed anywhere. Is this just a fake one or what ??? I've never heard about this type.

The webmaster has posted the available information but I just wanted to add that there are a lot of instruments for which you will not find information simply because the company went out of business a long time ago. That doesn't mean anything is "fake."

What is the definition of a "fake" instrument? If it looks like a soprano sax, smells like a soprano saxophone, and plays like one, isn't it a soprano saxophone? I have heard too many people refer to their instruments as fakes. They are still instruments, just made by non-popular companies.

Perhaps by "Fake" they mean "Rip-Off" as in they don't get what they pay for.

It is common for old sopranos to have highly unergonomic keywork and to play wildly out of tune. Some pivot tubes are very short and even small wear makes them very 'sloppy'. A well used old one could well need a great deal of overhauling to play reliably.

Tank you folks
You see I’m a novice when it comes to this. I just had a great experience about my own Selmer ten sax 1960 mod MK VI. I didn't know it was so valuable. It is in top condition. Silver plated with original accessories, like the neck , mouthpiece and suitcase. I thought perhaps this soprano was a jewel as well.
