 Bach books?
Author: klimshelf

In going through my many practice books I seem to gravitate towards the three selections that are "after Johann Sebastian Bach" in Advanced Studies by Victor Polatschek. Can someone recommend a music book that contains several, if not all, similar pieces by Bach or "after Bach"?

The Himie Voxman is incomparable. I'd lost mine and have at this very moment ordered another one. Thanks to you! There are a couple of French editions of the Bach cello suites: nowhere near as good as the Voxman.

The Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin contain many pieces that are well suited for clarinet. Same with the Cello Suites (you'll need the violin transcription).

Bach's Art of the Fugue has several pieces for two instruments. They're good practice played independently and you can play them with a cello, a bassoon, a bass clarinet, a double bass. Some of the greatest music ever written and makes for good practice.

Ulysse Delecluse arranged a number of Bach violin pieces and published it as Quinze etudes.

I prefer to read the Bach violin sonatas and partitas from the violin score and transpose. Delecluse removes nearly all the multiple stops and maintains the upper line of the solo part. In the Bach solo works, however, the "soprano" voice often descends into an inner voice or an inner voice reaches over and becomes higher than the soprano. When you just play the upper line, then, you're often playing the soprano part but sometimes playing an alto or a tenor part. The result can range from weird voice leading to disjunct melodies. So I prefer to see the unarranged music and make my own choices, but your mileage may vary.

There's also a number of Bach flute works that can be played on the clarinet. Moreover, Telemann has some wonderful flute fantasias that also work well.

That site is a bit expensive - $9.99.

My copy clearly has $2.00 printed on the cover! :)

The Voxman is a classic--a big fat book at a reasonable price. There are also many other transcriptions of Bach for clarinet. Eric Simon has a two volume edition of Bach for clarinet and piano. Other arrangements have been issued by Ronald Caravan, Larry Clark, and Florent Heau (as well as the already mentioned Delecluse book). The Italian Ricordi edition of Bach for clarinet--the Giampieri transcription--is perhaps the most technically challenging and it costs only $8.25 https://www.prestomusic.com/sheet-music/products/7069101--johann-sebastian-bach-21-pieces-for-clarinet.

Finally, there are transcriptions by Joseph Eller, who also offers a CD recording of him playing Bach on clarinet. https://www.josepheller.com/transcriptions.
