pruefer silver throat

has any one else ever heard of these clarinets ? they make great jazz horns. the coin silver liner and hard rubber body really make them project! they also have leather pads instead of bladder. they can be had cheap on ebay (i got both of mine there) these are really very good horns

While I can't speak about the Silver Throat model specifically, I can speak about Pruefer in general. The company ceased to make clarinets in the 1970s. Prior to that time, they were a very fine American manufacturer of clarinets. From the specimens that I have seen, they were far better than Conn and not far behind the French makers.

I own a Pruefer Artist model from 1940. It has an excellent sound and blends well with my Leblanc when I and my daughter play together. On this particular instrument, one must be sure to use a barrel of the correct length. Pruefer put the body/barrel split at a different location than we are accustomed to seeing in most horns. The combined length is of course the same but the barrel is quite long compared to most horns. If it were ever to need replacing, one would have to be sure to get one of the proper length. I don't know if your horn is the same way but it is something to check and be aware of. Also my Pruefer does run a bit sharper than my other horns so one must pull the barrel a bit more than usual or select a flatter mouthpiece.

I restored a Pruefer Silver Throat clarinet last year, turned out to be (as Dee said) a decent beginner/intermediate instrument. The other Pruefer's I've seen (and I currently have two unrestored ones) have also been well-made, whether student-line or advanced/professional.

thanks for the response. i agree on the quality being better than conn. i first bought a hard rubber conn to play outside (for big band) and the puefer plays circles around it.very strong upper regester .perfect for big band . here in florida it would be a crime to use a good french wood clarinet outside especialy in summer! it does tune a little sharp but thats a good thing for big band as the horn sits for long periods of time and better sharp than flat! these horns are ideal for this purpose thanks
