 Darkened appearance of Buffet 10272x

I have a nice Buffet #10272x that plays beautifully and responds well. So I am happy.

But I can't help be curious at its strange appearance. It's oddly, overly "dark" (black) in color. I've never seen a clarinet with such a matte (un-shiny) finish, almost like somebody finished it off with shoe polish (and didn't rub hard enough). All the Buffet logos are 100% filled in (no longer a trace of gold).

One major reason I invested in this clarinet was that the person I bought it from displayed a receipt for a recent overhaul (among other positive aspects of the transaction). And as I say, I have no problems with it at all.

I might put the issue entirely out of mind except one thing bothers me: if you look at one of the photos I've posted, the Buffet logo on the bottom joint still has gold leaf in it, as if somebody had rubbed black shoe polish on the clarinet without bothering to remove the big rod there just above the bell.

Anyone ever seen a matte black Buffet before? Any clues what might have been done to it? Infusion in salad oil?

It looks like it's been scrubbed to clean it (either using a strong detergent, alcohol or solvent) which has stripped the polished finish and exposed the surface vessels which get filled in during polishing.

That half-arsed attempt to regild the logo is ridiculous as the logos are stamped deeper at the left and right sides than in the middle.

Chris,

They didn't re-gild any logos. What scares me is that there's some gold left under the long bottom joint rod ... which to me means they scrubbed the body down with the keywork still attached.

Yikes!
