Found one. A 1-piece Bass Clarinet Case for $95.00 plus shipping ($10.00) at 1-800 USABAND (tel:1-800-843-1938) They have a "captive" case maker who used to work for Conn. Hard shell wooden, vinyl covering etc. They also have Selmer cases, blemished--minor cosmetic nicks etc) at the same price. All kinds of cases in stock. The deal mostly with beginning bands etc., and replacement cases etc. Talk to Mr. LaVar Wheery. Fine gent.
Mark Theil wanted a Tenor sax case. They have them also.

I have a Conn case or 2. IMO, there is _NO_ comparison between the Pro-tec case you were quoted at $130.00 and a Conn case. The Pro-tec is a vastly superior case w/a 5 year manufacturer's warranty against defects. If all you are playing is how cheap can I buy it, by all means proceed. If you want a better value, buy the Pro-tec @ $130.00 -- which is almost a 20% discount from the list price of $169. You can probably take your old case case to a Luggage or Shoe Repair Shop ... they can fix latches. Some can fix or work with the interior forms of instrument cases. Most music stores can replace the outside latches, too --- especially on horns like Conn, Selmer & Yamaha. UMI sells a generic latch kit with a rivit tool for this express purpose.

Just a comment: I haven't seen the Pro-Tec bass clarinet case, but I own one of their Bb/A soprano clarinet double cases, and it's fairly decent and a good value, but the clarinets are a rather loose fit in the case. Since I don't travel much this doesn't bother me, but I would hesitate to recommend the Pro-Tec to a full-time professional musician because of the loose fit (and the fact that the only thing holding the case shut is a zipper on the soft outer cover, and zippers have a bad habit of failing).

We own several Pro-tec clarinet cases. All feature wood frame design coupled with shock -absorbing foam & an outside of 1000 denier nylon with brass hardware. We own the (model name) Pro-pac Carry-all for Bb soprano clarinet & the Pro-pac 2X clarinet case, the latter holding a Buffet R-13 Bb & a Yamaha YCL-72csA. We have no (loose) movement of clarinet parts within our case. The separate zippered compartment for sheet music works very well. It is a very sturdy case. The ZIPPER used is the BEST on the market today. This latter Pro-tec case replaced a BAM double case where the zipper FAILED. BAM offered no 5 year warranty. The carry-all Bb soprano (single) case is a wonderful case --- very inexpensive in cost, but tremendous in utility.

PS - As a matter of full disclosure, I am a dealer for Pro-tec --- but I do believe in their product & workmanship. Pro-tec stands behind their products & their errors ---in woirkmanship and/or materials.

My tenor sax fell off the top of the band lockers at my school. The case was still like brand new and the instrument didn't get harmed one bit. I feel pro-tech cases are one of the few real values of this time as they are so much better than cases in their price range and cases costing two, three, four times as much ...."

Yes, my father has always been worried he would OUTLIVE his money. He is 80 now. My grandfather worried about this as well. SO, in their case, it's either genetic or a hangover from a depression-era mentality. (the latter is actually the case)
I can only say what has happened to me with BAM & Fel/Orly cases that failed a year or so after purchase. ( w/no warranty to fall back on ) Sometimes spending a little more is worth it; sometimes not. Contact me off-list if price is _that_ mission critical & I well see what I can do to help you.
