 Bonade Inverted Ligature... Ugh!!
Author: Ben Shaffer

Well I bought a Bonade Inverted Ligature, nickel Finish
And just like everybody says, it slips and rides up on the Mouthpiece, or at least it does on my Mouthpiece which is a VD M13 :(
For a second before it slips up it actually sounds pretty good.
Not wanting to throw the baby out with the bathwater I'd like to maybe explore the customized Bonade Inverted Ligature model Muncys Winds offers, or converting mine.
Its Silver with with the bar cut out on the part of the ligature resting against the reed and there are still 4 metal points that the reed rests on.
Quick question, does anyone have one of these Customized Bonade Inverted Ligatures and if so what do you think?
The Muncy Folks suggest that the Ligature will not ride up as its silver, I could cut out the part on my nickel version but that may not help the slipping up
Their customized version is I believe $35 or so
I'd prefer not spening more money on another ligature,
,Or I may just buy a Luyben like I had years ago.. not much Money.Inverted and sounded nice

I have and am using an inverted nickel-finished Bonade. I took it to a jeweler and had him cut out the middle piece at the recommendation of a friend who has been playing with one since high school. It doesn't slip on my mouthpiece. Be sure you loosen the screws enough to place the ligature pretty low on the mouthpiece and reed, then tighten the screws no more than SNUG. You want the reed to vibrate. I have the same ligature in silver plate and plan to have it cut out, too.

Do a search on Bonade Inverted Ligature on this forum. There's a wealth of discussion about adjusting them and on slippage and how to stop it.

I've cut the middle out of several Bonade inverted ligatures over the years. I've read that Marcellus started that trend, or at least made it popular. It seems to make the response freer, but that may have been more in my head - a self-fulfilling expectation - than an objective result. Modified in that way or not, I don't find that they slip on my mouthpieces, but one petty detail I always disliked about them is that they make a mark on the back of the mouthpiece.

When I was using Bonades (I've recently been using a VD Ultima, which I like marginally better), I had two ways to protect the mouthpieces, either of which, I think, would also stop the ligature from sliding up. The quick and easy fix was to put a rubber or plastic mouthpiece patch on the back of the mouthpiece. Sometimes the adhesive would squeeze out under the patch and get gummy. Another, slightly more labor-intensive way that doesn't get sloppy over time is to cement a thin strip of cork along each of the two edges of the ligature behind the screw eyelets. I use contact cement. The cork should give you more grip against the mouthpiece material.

Based on my own experience, I don't think the slippage has anything to do with the metal finish. I think it probably has more to do with the shape and, maybe, the surface finish of the mouthpiece blank.

I occasionally use a non-inverted Bonade ... it seems to keep the ligature away from the sides of the reed much better than the inverted. However, the chance of the little metal rails uniformly contacting the bark over the length of the reed is remote ... there are high and low spots. I think a round rod, instead of the little (not quite so) "flat" rails might be better. I can see that cutting away much of the ligature, including the rails, might reduce this problem.

I like two screw ligatures ... I might be open to a longer three screw ligature with three pairs of contact points on the reed.

The Luyben solves some of the problems ... but I prefer metal for the material. If you could put threaded inserts into this ligature (especially reverse threaded on one side), you would have a nicer product, IMHO.

Ohhh ... the slipping is common on nickle plating ... use some steel wool and rough up the plating on the inside of the ligature. Or, you can add some gaffer's tape ...

Light sanding of the inside will solve that problem. Over the years I tried the inverted with a cut out and played it for some time. I ultimately liked the version without better. It seemed to center the tone on my set up better.

I had been using a Brancher ligature on my Greg Smith mouthpiece for many years. I had very little problem with slippage as the mouthpiece was not overly snug. Then the unthinkable happened and my mouthpiece had an "unfortunate encounter" with the floor, big chunk missing. Bought a new mouthpiece which fits very snuggly and the Brancher was not up to the task any more. Bought a very inexpensive Rovner dark ligature. It holds fast while I remove and replace the mouthpiece. After I bought the Rovner I did a comparison with it, the Brancher, and a piece of Velcro. I could not detect any difference in sound or feel among the three options.

A Rovner could be the answer to your problem. Just my thought.....

I second the light sanding. You are putting small irregular "treads" into the metal this way (so it makes sense to rub left/right or twisting motion........and just a little goes a long way).

If you go Rovner, the Rovner Light is an amazing ligature and I'd put that up against the most expensive and esoteric designs out there.

If you don't want to glue some paper-thin strips of cork on the inside of the ligature bands, you can also just use strips of (paper) masking tape which will stick without using any contact cement.

Both very well prevent slippage.
