Try them. We can't really judge from a distance. Both are fine mouthpieces.

You should try several (at least 3) M13 and (at least 3) M13Lyre, since within the same model, not all mouthpieces are alike.

If you try them, you will HEAR that that they do not have the same exact sound and you will FEAL a different resistance: if you then LOOK at them you may be able to SEE the difference (eg. size of baffles, window etc.).

A short story. Last time I had to replace my mouthpiece I asked to try all the B40 profile 88 they had in the shop. They brought me 6. And I tried each of them more than once for 45 minutes (comparing them with my old mouthpiece and among them). At the end I did not like any one of those better than my old, and was about to leave. At that point, the sales person brough out other 4 (apparently, they were set aside for a pro). I tried those other, and they were all better. After another 45 minutes of trying and comparing, I selected the one I liked more.

You asked if there is something better than the M13 or an M13 Lyre. My answer is that it depends. Vandoren are good standards and have a large variety of sizes: that is to say, if you like certain characteristics (eg. that of a M13), you can rely on a given consistency when you need to replace that mouthpiece (ALWAYS provided you still try to pick the best for you within a reasonable selection).

If you still are not sure which model you prefer or is better fitting you (in a given period of life!!!). Then you should search and try lots of models.

On the other hand, if you know by sure that the technical specifications of a M13 is what you prefer and these are the ones that are fitting you the most.....then certainly there might be something better: a hand made mouthpiece by a great mouthpiece maker.

The good thing about Vandoren is that if you are not an expert you can't go terribly wrong.

Hope it helps!
