Hi guys!
I'm new here and i'm french clarinet player ( excuse me for my poor english ;-).
I've got a American standard restored ( serial number 5000's) and i've an intonation issue.
The medium B flat ( key 10 and 12) is very very high ( near B). I'm trying to change the opening of this two key but it isn't convincing.
So, i have two questions :
- American standart onwer's have this issue too ?
- Is there a better solution than to change key openning to correct it (like reduce tone hole diameter for ex) ?
Thank you for your help.

Key height is not the problem.
I am not an authority but it may be a 442 pitch instrument.
Or if the Bb is very sharp, the A is fairly sharp, the Ab is less sharp, etc. the instrument needs a longer barrel (unless it is a metal clarinet.
Then if it is metal, the mouthpiece may be wrong for the instrument.
More information may be helpful.

If the problem is only throat Bb (and maybe A and G#), you can try putting some thin tape around the top inside of the A tonehole (and the G# hole if the notes are *very* sharp). Use layers so you can add thickness gradually and test the result at each step.
You might also try a longer barrel, as Ken suggested. But if the rest of the clarinet is reasonably well-tuned with your current barrel, it may bring the middle chalumeau notes down more than you want.

Hi, Pat:
An American Standard clarinet could date back to the 1920s. It will almost certainly require a large-chamber mouthpiece to play in tune with itself.
If you have been attempting to play it with a Vandoren M13 or M15, give it a test play using a B45 instead and see if the intonation issues improve.
Regards,
Greg

I strongly second Greg's suggestion about the mp; I have several vintage metal clarinets in good shape but which may not even play at all with a recent mp. I have had good response with the older B45s. There are several variations within the B45s : the best one is the one with both large lettered 'B45' on the front and on the side, it has a slightly wider opening at the base of the slope inside (plus evasée) than those with just very small letters on the side or large in front and small on the side (je sais, c'est compliqué!). I got mine on Leboncoin.

Thank you everybody for your reply.
This clarinet is globally weel tuned execped this Bb (A and G# are ok , clairon and chalumeau registers too).
I played usually with a B40 and i 'm going to play with a B45 Lyre (opened mouthpiece) and a crystal pomarico number 2 with the same result (A:395 Hz, Bb : 430 hz, B: 440Hz ).
I will try to reduce the tonehole diameter by Karl's method and I 'll search vintage mouthpieces to test.
I'll give you my feedback.
