My eighth-grade grandson wants to play a duo for solo and ensemble with his bassoonist buddy. They are not ready for the Beethoven duos yet. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

This is a hard one Don. There is surely not much written. Maybe transpose and rewrite a clarinet and bass clarinet part? Maybe something from the cello world?
A good time for Ed Palanker to pop in. Maybe he has some stock work around from his days of teaching the clarinet and bass

I just took a quick look at trumpet and trombone duets and saw a few arrangements by Lars Lundholm.......for example.

If you do a search for clarinet and bassoon duets at Sheet Music Plus or freescores.com you might find something appropriate.

First, does your grandson play clarinet (as I think we're all assuming)?
I'm not clear about what he wants to play - a duo (clarinet and bassoon) with an ensemble accompaniment or just a duo for clarinet and bassoon. Or something else? If with an ensemble accompaniment, what kind - band? orchestra? some kind of chamber ensemble?

Dan: EMB (Edition Musica Budapest) publishes an excellent duet book for clarinet and bassoon. It has music from all sorts of different periods and of varying difficulty. I think it would be perfect for your grandson-but they are just duets: no accompaniment.

Karl: Grandson plays clarinet and I'm looking for unaccompanied duets for clarinet and bassoon (like the Beethoven or Poulenc but easier!).
Ruben: Thanks - ordered it from Amazon.

Dan: all of the pieces in the book sound good on the cello too. I-yours truly-composed a duet for clarinet: "Variations on Blue Monk" published by Viento (if the company still exists). Pretty tough, though. one variation is in 15/8. Three movements are very easy. I could snaimail it to you. Don't spend good money on it!
